The नवग्रह (Navagraha) — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu — are the nine planetary forces that Vedic astrology reads in every kundali. When one or more is weak or afflicted, tradition prescribes Navagraha Shanti: mantra, daan, fasting, worship and, in some cases, a gemstone. A complete Navagraha Shanti puja honours all nine together, so that no planet is neglected while another is being strengthened.
This guide covers each graha one by one — how affliction tends to show, its beej mantra in Devanagari and transliteration, its day, colour, daan items, gemstone and fast — followed by the full puja vidhi and a summary table.
Note: Astrology complements, but never replaces, medical, legal or financial advice. If a planetary affliction is linked to health, see a doctor alongside any remedy.
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) includes a chapter on remedies for planetary afflictions, describing worship of each graha, its mantra, daan and havan with its specific wood (samidha). The Navagraha Stotra attributed to Vyasa ("जपाकुसुमसंकाशं...") is recited widely. Grihya and Purana traditions describe the Navagraha mandal, the layout used in most Hindu pujas, so the nine planets are worshipped at the start of almost every major ritual in Bihar — from Vivah to Griha Pravesh.
The full jap counts given below are the ones most purohits follow for a graha shanti; some traditions multiply them by four in Kali Yuga, and others use different counts, so follow your purohit's parampara. For a daily home practice, one mala (108 times) is sufficient.
Signs of affliction: Low confidence, trouble with father or superiors, obstacles in government work, eye or heart-related complaints, ego clashes. Beej mantra: ॐ ह्रां ह्रीं ह्रौं सः सूर्याय नमः॥ — Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah. (Salutations to Surya.) Full count: 7,000. Day: Sunday. Colour: Red, copper, saffron. Daan: Wheat, jaggery, copper vessel, red cloth, red flowers. Gemstone: Ruby (माणिक्य, Manikya). Fast: Sunday fast with one salt-free meal before sunset. Practice: Arghya to the rising Sun with water, red flowers and akshat. Bihar's tradition of Surya worship — Chhath on the Ganga ghats of Patna, and the Dev Surya Mandir in Aurangabad — makes this especially natural here. See our guide to Dev Surya Mandir and Surya dosh remedies.
Signs of affliction: Anxiety, mood swings, poor sleep, strained relationship with mother, emotional dependency. Beej mantra: ॐ श्रां श्रीं श्रौं सः चन्द्रमसे नमः॥ — Om Shraam Shreem Shraum Sah Chandramase Namah. Full count: 11,000. Day: Monday. Colour: White, silver. Daan: Rice, milk, curd, white cloth, sugar, silver. Gemstone: Pearl (मोती, Moti). Fast: Monday vrat, often with Shiva worship. Practice: Offer water or milk to a Shivling on Mondays; Purnima puja.
Signs of affliction: Anger, accidents, disputes over land, conflict with siblings, debt, delays in marriage if linked to Mangal Dosha. Beej mantra: ॐ क्रां क्रीं क्रौं सः भौमाय नमः॥ — Om Kraam Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah. Full count: 10,000. Day: Tuesday. Colour: Red. Daan: Masoor dal, jaggery, red cloth, copper, wheat. Gemstone: Red coral (मूंगा, Moonga). Fast: Mangalvar vrat with Hanuman worship. Practice: Hanuman Chalisa, Rin Mochan Mangal Stotra. See our guides on Mangal Dosha and karz mukti remedies.
Signs of affliction: Poor concentration, speech or communication problems, losses in trade, skin issues, nervousness. Beej mantra: ॐ ब्रां ब्रीं ब्रौं सः बुधाय नमः॥ — Om Braam Breem Braum Sah Budhaya Namah. Full count: 9,000. Day: Wednesday. Colour: Green. Daan: Whole moong, green cloth, green vegetables, fodder for cows. Gemstone: Emerald (पन्ना, Panna). Fast: Wednesday vrat. Practice: Ganesh worship, feeding green grass to cows, Vishnu Sahasranama.
Signs of affliction: Delay in marriage (especially for women), lack of guidance, problems with children or education, digestive or liver complaints, loss of respect. Beej mantra: ॐ ग्रां ग्रीं ग्रौं सः गुरवे नमः॥ — Om Graam Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah. Full count: 19,000. Day: Thursday. Colour: Yellow. Daan: Chana dal, turmeric, yellow cloth, bananas, books, gold in larger rituals. Gemstone: Yellow sapphire (पुखराज, Pukhraj). Fast: Brihaspativar vrat with banana-tree worship. Practice: Respect for teachers and elders; Vishnu worship; feeding Brahmins or students.
Signs of affliction: Marital discord, lack of comfort, problems with vehicles or luxuries, reproductive health concerns, creative blocks. Beej mantra: ॐ द्रां द्रीं द्रौं सः शुक्राय नमः॥ — Om Draam Dreem Draum Sah Shukraya Namah. Full count: 16,000. Day: Friday. Colour: White, light pink. Daan: Rice, sugar, ghee, white clothes, perfume, curd. Gemstone: Diamond (हीरा, Heera); white sapphire or opal as alternatives some astrologers use. Fast: Friday vrat, often with Lakshmi or Santoshi Mata worship. Practice: Lakshmi puja, respect for women in the home, cleanliness.
Signs of affliction: Delays, heavy responsibilities, chronic ailments, job instability, isolation, especially during Sade Sati or Dhaiya. Beej mantra: ॐ प्रां प्रीं प्रौं सः शनैश्चराय नमः॥ — Om Praam Preem Praum Sah Shanaischaraya Namah. Full count: 23,000. Day: Saturday. Colour: Black, dark blue. Daan: Multi-coloured blanket, sesame, seven grains (saptadhanya), food for dogs. Gemstone: Cat's eye (लहसुनिया, Lehsunia). Practice: Ganesh worship, feeding dogs.

Gemstones are the most powerful — and most misused — remedy. A stone strengthens a planet; it does not "pacify" it. If that planet is a functional malefic for your lagna, the stone can strengthen the problem. Blue sapphire, cat's eye and hessonite in particular can act quickly. Wear any stone only after full chart analysis, preferably with a trial period of a few days while observing sleep, mood and events. Our lagna guide explains why the same planet can be friendly for one person and difficult for another, and our gemstone recommendation service gives a chart-based answer.
A complete Navagraha Shanti is usually performed by a trained purohit over two to four hours, or across several days if the full mantra counts are to be completed.
Do: keep the vow simple and regular, donate with respect, focus on the planet your chart indicates, and maintain sattvic food on puja days. Don't: wear multiple strong gemstones without advice, start heavy fasts if you have a medical condition, or treat remedies as a substitute for practical effort.
Navagraha worship is woven into Bihar's ritual life. Many temples in Patna, Gaya and Bhagalpur have Navagraha shrines, Chhath is the region's great festival of Surya worship, and Gaya is renowned for ancestral rituals often paired with graha shanti for Pitru Dosh. Families from Gaya, Aurangabad and Bhagalpur often ask for a Navagraha Shanti before a wedding or when a new mahadasha begins.
Bring your date, exact time and place of birth. In a kundali analysis, Astrologer Praveen Kumar identifies which grahas are genuinely afflicted, which are functional benefics for your lagna, and which dasha is running. You receive a short, focused remedy plan — which mantra, which day, which daan, and whether any gemstone is suitable — plus a muhurat if a full Navagraha Shanti is advisable. It is commonly done before major life events such as marriage, griha pravesh or starting a business, at the start of a difficult mahadasha, on a birthday, or when several planets are afflicted. The day and muhurat are chosen from the Panchang, often a Sunday or a day linked to the most troubled planet, avoiding Rahu Kaal and Bhadra.
A simple version is possible at home: set up nine heaps of grain in the Navagraha mandal pattern, offer flowers, lamp and naivedya, and chant each beej mantra 108 times. A full Navagraha Shanti with havan, kalash sthapana and the complete mantra counts is usually performed with a trained purohit to follow the vidhi correctly.
The counts most purohits follow are Sun 7,000, Moon 11,000, Mars 10,000, Mercury 9,000, Jupiter 19,000, Venus 16,000, Saturn 23,000, Rahu 18,000 and Ketu 17,000, and some traditions multiply these by four in Kali Yuga. For daily practice at home, one mala of 108 for the relevant planet is enough.
A Navaratna ring is traditionally seen as balancing, but it still places stones of planets that may be functional malefics for your lagna on your body. Many astrologers prefer advising only the stones suited to your chart. Wear any gemstone, including a Navaratna, only after chart analysis and ideally after a short trial period.
Without a chart, the safest traditional practice is general worship: Surya Arghya every morning, the Navagraha Stotra or the nine beej mantras once a day, and simple charity. Specific remedies such as gemstones, heavy fasting or large daan should wait until your birth chart is read, since a remedy for the wrong planet can be unhelpful.
