Grahan dosh in kundali (ग्रहण दोष) is one of the most searched doshas after Kaal Sarp and Mangal Dosha — and one of the most misunderstood. In simple terms, it forms when the shadow planets Rahu or Ketu sit with the Sun or the Moon in a birth chart, symbolically "eclipsing" the two lights of the horoscope. This guide explains what grahan dosh really is, how to check it in your own kundli, how Surya and Chandra grahan dosh differ, what birth during an eclipse means, the Sutak rules followed during real eclipses, and the traditional upay (remedies).
Quick answer: Grahan dosh exists when Rahu or Ketu is conjunct the Sun (Surya grahan dosh) or the Moon (Chandra grahan dosh) in the birth chart. It can weaken confidence, peace of mind, or the bond with a parent, but its strength depends on degrees, signs, Jupiter's protection and dasha. Remedies centre on Surya or Chandra strengthening, Rahu-Ketu japa, daan and eclipse-day worship.
| Feature | Surya Grahan Dosh | Chandra Grahan Dosh |
|---|---|---|
| Combination | Sun with Rahu or Ketu | Moon with Rahu or Ketu |
| Main areas hit | Confidence, father, career authority, government work, eyes and heart vitality | Mind, sleep, emotions, mother, fluids and hormonal balance |
| Typical feeling | "My efforts are not recognised" | "My mind is never at rest" |
| Main deity | Surya Narayan, Lord Vishnu | Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati |
| Key mantra | Aditya Hridayam, Surya Beej mantra | Chandra Beej mantra, Om Namah Shivaya |
| Best remedy day | Sunday, Amavasya, solar eclipse | Monday, Purnima, lunar eclipse |
| Daan items | Wheat, jaggery, copper, red cloth | Rice, milk, white cloth, silver |
In the Puranic story, the demon Svarbhanu drank amrit disguised among the devas. Surya and Chandra exposed him, and Lord Vishnu's Sudarshan Chakra cut him into Rahu (head) and Ketu (body). Ever since, the story goes, Rahu and Ketu "swallow" the Sun and Moon at eclipse time. Astronomically, Rahu and Ketu are the lunar nodes, and real eclipses happen only when the Sun and Moon are near these nodes — so the astrological image matches the sky.
In a birth chart, the Sun is the atma karaka (soul, self, vitality) and the Moon is the manas karaka (mind, emotions). When a node sits with either, the light of that planet is distorted. Rahu tends to magnify and confuse; Ketu tends to cut off and detach. Classical texts such as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra treat the nodes' conjunctions with the luminaries as afflictions, and BPHS also discusses shanti for a birth that takes place during an eclipse. The modern label "grahan dosh" is a convenient name for this family of combinations. For the broader nature of the nodes, read our guide on Rahu and Ketu effects and remedies.

Rahu inflates ambition but clouds the Sun's clarity. Common patterns:
Ketu "cuts" the Sun's light, so the person may feel invisible or detached from worldly rank. It can give spiritual depth, research ability and disinterest in politics, but also a weak sense of self, a distant father, or a career that keeps restarting.
This is the combination most people mean by "grahan dosh." Rahu disturbs the mind:
Ketu with the Moon gives emotional detachment, intuition and spiritual inclination, but also loneliness, a sense of emptiness, or sudden emotional withdrawal.
Where symptoms such as anxiety, depression or sleep disorders are present, astrology complements but never replaces a doctor or counsellor. Our medical astrology guide explains how charts are used alongside treatment.
| Life area | Possible effect (when afflicted and unprotected) |
|---|---|
| Career | Delayed promotion, unstable authority, conflicts with seniors |
| Mind | Anxiety, fear, overthinking, poor concentration |
| Family | Distance from father (Sun) or mother (Moon) |
| Marriage | Emotional misunderstandings if the 7th house or its lord is involved |
| Health | Low vitality, eye strain, digestion or sleep issues — see a doctor |
| Spiritual life | Often strong — eclipse yogas push people toward mantra and meditation |
A separate but related matter is a child born during an actual solar or lunar eclipse. Traditional texts, including the shanti sections of BPHS, prescribe a grahan janma shanti for such births. In the chart, the Sun, Moon and a node will usually be very close together, so the grahan yoga is tight.
Traditional practice for such a birth:
An eclipse birth is not a curse. Many such children grow up perfectly well. The shanti is a traditional act of protection, not a correction of something "wrong" with the child.
When a real eclipse is visible in your area, families across Bihar follow Sutak (सूतक) rules:
| Rule | Solar eclipse (Surya Grahan) | Lunar eclipse (Chandra Grahan) |
|---|---|---|
| Sutak begins | About 12 hours (4 prahar) before | About 9 hours (3 prahar) before |
| Temples | Doors closed until after the eclipse and purification | Same |
| Cooking and eating | Avoided during sutak; tulsi or kusha placed in stored food and water | Same |
| Exemptions | Children, the elderly, the sick and pregnant women may eat | Same |
| During the eclipse | Japa, dhyan, bhajan; no new work | Same |
| After it ends | Bath (ideally in the Ganga), purify the house, daan | Same |
Key points:
For broader planetary balancing see our Navagraha Shanti puja guide. If your chart also shows all planets between the nodes, read about Kaal Sarp Dosh puja in Bihar — the two are often confused.
Ruby (Manik) for the Sun or pearl (Moti) for the Moon can help only if that planet is a functional benefic for your lagna. Wearing a stone that strengthens Rahu (Gomed) when Rahu is the problem can worsen the dosh. Wear any gemstone only after full chart analysis, test it for a trial period, and remove it if you notice negative effects.

| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| Grahan dosh ruins the whole life | It affects specific areas, mostly during related dashas |
| Every Rahu-Moon chart has severe dosh | Degree gap, sign and Jupiter can make it mild |

Look at the house holding the Sun and the Moon in your birth chart. If Rahu or Ketu sits in the same house, a grahan yoga is present. Its real strength depends on the degree gap, the signs involved, aspects from Jupiter and the running dasha, so a closer conjunction within roughly ten to twelve degrees is taken more seriously than a wide one.
Neither is automatically worse. Chandra grahan dosh mainly disturbs the mind, sleep, emotional security and the bond with the mother, while Surya grahan dosh affects confidence, career authority, government matters and the relationship with the father. Which one feels heavier depends on which planet rules important houses in your chart and whose dasha is running.
Its effect is reduced when Jupiter aspects or joins the combination, when the Sun or Moon is strong by sign such as an exalted or own sign, when the conjunction is wide in degrees, or when the house lord is well placed. Many charts that show the yoga on paper give only mild results because of such protective factors.
Traditionally she stays indoors, avoids sharp tools and cutting, chants a protective mantra such as the Santana Gopala or Mahamrityunjaya mantra, and bathes after the eclipse ends. Sutak food rules are relaxed for her. These are customs of faith; she should follow her doctor's advice on food, rest and medicines without interruption.
The most traditional time is the day of an actual solar or lunar eclipse visible in your area, with japa during the eclipse and daan after it. Otherwise an Amavasya for Surya grahan dosh, a Purnima or Monday for Chandra grahan dosh, or a Saturday for Rahu, chosen against your own chart, is commonly used.
