Among the nine planets (Navagraha) of Vedic astrology, none are as mysterious or as powerful as राहु (Rahu) and केतु (Ketu) — the shadow planets. They are not physical bodies but mathematical points, yet their influence on human life is profound. Across Bihar, when a chart shows unexpected turmoil, sudden gains, obsessions or spiritual awakenings, an experienced astrologer often looks first to Rahu and Ketu. This guide explains what they signify, their effects house by house, the doshas they form, their dashas and transits, and the step-by-step remedies tradition prescribes.
Rahu and Ketu are the two lunar nodes — the points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic, the Sun's apparent path. Eclipses happen only when the Sun and Moon are near these points. Because they are points, not bodies, they are called छाया ग्रह (Chhaya Grahas) — shadow planets. They always move backwards (retrograde) and sit exactly 180 degrees apart.
In the Puranic story of the churning of the ocean, the asura Svarbhanu drank the nectar of immortality and was beheaded by Vishnu's Sudarshan Chakra. The head became Rahu and the body Ketu. This origin explains their nature:
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) includes Rahu and Ketu among the nine grahas, gives them dashas in the Vimshottari system, and describes their nature and remedies. Together they form the karmic axis — Rahu shows where the soul hungers to grow, Ketu what it has already mastered and must now release.
| Feature | Rahu | Ketu |
|---|---|---|
| Nature | Amplifies, adds, obsesses | Subtracts, detaches, liberates |
| Mahadasha | 18 years | 7 years |
| Deity | Goddess Durga, Bhairav | Lord Ganesha |
| Day for remedies | Saturday | Tuesday or Saturday |
| Gemstone | Hessonite (Gomed) | Cat's Eye (Lehsunia) |
| Colour | Dark blue, smoky | Multi-coloured, grey |
| Grain for charity | Black urad, mustard | Mixed grains, sesame |
| Behaves like | Saturn | Mars |
Texts differ on their signs of exaltation — Rahu is commonly taken as strong in Taurus or Gemini, and Ketu in Scorpio or Sagittarius — so careful astrologers judge them mainly by house, dispositor and conjunctions.
Rahu is the great amplifier. Wherever it sits, it magnifies that house's affairs — sometimes to excess.
Positive expressions: ambition and sudden success in unconventional fields (technology, media, aviation, foreign trade, politics); boldness and innovation; foreign travel, residence or income.
Challenging expressions: obsession, addiction and confused judgement; temptation toward shortcuts or deception; anxiety, phobias and restlessness; fear of unknown events.
Ketu is Rahu's opposite — subtractive rather than additive.
Positive expressions: spiritual depth and intuition; effortless skill carried from past lives, often in research, healing, mathematics or the occult; freedom from attachment.
Challenging expressions: sudden losses or separations; disinterest in worldly duties; confusion, low confidence or a feeling of being lost.
Rahu and Ketu always occupy opposite houses, so each placement is an axis.
| Rahu in | Ketu in | Main Theme |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | 7th | Strong self-drive and image; challenges in partnership and marriage |
| 2nd | 8th | Ambition for wealth, sharp speech; sudden ups and downs in family finances |
| 3rd | 9th | Courage, media and communication success; questions about tradition or father's guidance |
| 4th | 10th | Restlessness about home or mother; detached yet capable at work |
| 5th | 11th | Unusual intelligence, speculation; concerns around children — see Santan Prapti |
| 6th | 12th | Strong against enemies and competition; good for service and litigation success |
| 7th | 1st | Intense desire through relationships, foreign spouse or partner; search for identity |
| 8th | 2nd | Interest in hidden knowledge, sudden events; care needed with speech and family |
| 9th | 3rd | Unconventional beliefs, foreign travel; tests with father or teachers |
| 10th | 4th | Powerful career ambition and public rise; less peace at home |
| 11th | 5th | Large gains and networks; detached approach to romance or studies |
| 12th | 6th | Foreign settlement, expenses, spiritual pull; ability to overcome disease and debt |
This is only a broad sketch. Actual results depend on the sign, the dispositor (the lord of the sign Rahu or Ketu occupies), conjunctions, aspects and the dasha in operation. Because the nodes are so context-dependent, they are among the most misread factors in automated reports.
| Dosha | Formation | Traditional Concern |
|---|---|---|
| Kaal Sarp Dosh | All seven planets between Rahu and Ketu | Repeated obstacles and delays — see Kalsarp Dosh puja in Bihar |
| Grahan Dosh | Rahu or Ketu with the Sun or Moon | Low confidence, anxious mind, issues with father or mother |
| Guru Chandal Dosh | Rahu with Jupiter | Confusion in values, guidance and education |
| Angarak Dosh | Rahu or Ketu with Mars | Anger, impulsiveness, accidents |
| Pitru Dosh link | Rahu with Sun, or nodes in the 9th | Ancestral karma — see Pitru Dosh and Gaya Tirth |
Whether such a dosha genuinely exists — and how strong it is — requires a full chart reading, not a quick app check.
In the Vimshottari system, Rahu mahadasha lasts 18 years and Ketu mahadasha 7 years. These are often the most transformative periods of life. A well-placed Rahu dasha can bring dramatic worldly success; an afflicted one, confusion and upheaval. Ketu's dasha frequently brings detachment, spiritual turning points and endings that clear space for new beginnings. Our guide to Vimshottari Mahadasha explains how these periods interact with antardashas.
In transit, the nodes spend roughly 18 months in each sign. When transiting Rahu or Ketu crosses the natal Moon, Sun or ascendant, their themes become especially active.
For doshas involving several planets, a Navagraha Shanti puja or Rudrabhishek is often advised.
Hessonite (गोमेद, Gomed) for Rahu and Cat's Eye (लहसुनिया, Lehsunia) for Ketu are powerful but unpredictable. Wear them only after full chart analysis, preferably with a short trial period, and remove them at once if anxiety, accidents or disturbed sleep increase. The wrong nodal stone can amplify exactly the problems you wish to reduce. Read more in our gemstone recommendations guide.
Do: keep promises, respect elders, keep your home clean and decluttered, practise meditation, and finish what you start.
Don't: take loans for speculation, use intoxicants, hide information from family, or start important work during Rahu Kaal if you follow muhurat.
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| Rahu dasha is always destructive | Many people rise sharply in Rahu dasha |
| Every chart with Rahu-Ketu has Kaal Sarp | Kaal Sarp needs all planets on one side of the axis |
| Ketu means only loss | Ketu also gives wisdom, research skill and spiritual growth |
| Gomed fixes Rahu for everyone | A wrong stone can worsen results |
In Bihar, Rahu and Ketu are most visibly remembered during grahan (eclipses): families pause cooking, chant, and take a Ganga snan afterward at ghats in Patna, Simaria and Sultanganj, followed by charity. For Rahu, many worship at Maa Mundeshwari in Kaimur, and in Navratri at Durga pandals across Patna and Darbhanga. For Ketu, Ganesh puja and Shiva worship at temples such as Baba Garib Nath in Muzaffarpur are common. Families in Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga and Kaimur often seek nodal analysis during Rahu dasha or before a Kaal Sarp puja.
Bring your date, exact time and place of birth. The consultation examines the nodal axis, dispositors, conjunctions, any doshas, the running dasha and transits, then gives a practical plan: which mantra, which day, which charity, and whether any puja or stone is truly needed.

No. Rahu amplifies whatever house and sign it occupies. In the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th house, or with a strong dispositor, Rahu can give ambition, courage and sudden rise, especially in modern fields like technology, media and foreign work. Problems arise mainly when Rahu afflicts the Moon, Sun or key house lords without benefic support.
Rahu mahadasha lasts 18 years and often brings rapid change, new ambitions, travel or foreign links, and unconventional opportunities. It can also bring restlessness, confusion and risky choices if Rahu is afflicted. Results depend on Rahu's house, sign, dispositor and the antardashas within it, so the period should be read from the full chart.
The traditional beej mantras are Om Bhram Bhreem Bhraum Sah Rahave Namah for Rahu and Om Sraam Sreem Sraum Sah Ketave Namah for Ketu. Classical practice counts 18,000 japa for Rahu and 17,000 for Ketu, spread over days. Durga worship for Rahu and Ganesha worship for Ketu are widely followed alternatives that are simple and safe.
It is not advisable. Hessonite for Rahu and Cat's Eye for Ketu are strong, unpredictable stones. Worn wrongly they can increase anxiety, accidents or confusion. They should be worn only after full chart analysis, ideally with a short trial period of a few days, and removed at once if you notice negative changes.
Rahu and Ketu move backwards through the zodiac and stay in each sign for about 18 months, always exactly opposite each other. Their transit over the natal Moon, Sun or ascendant is especially noticeable. Combined with the running dasha, the transit shows when nodal themes become active in a person's life.
