One of the most common questions clients ask across Bihar is simple: "If I have a good yoga in my chart, why hasn't it worked yet?" The answer, almost always, is timing. A birth chart shows the promise of your life — but the Vimshottari Mahadasha (विंशोत्तरी महादशा) system reveals when those promises actually unfold. Understanding dasha is what separates a generic prediction from a genuinely useful one. This guide explains the system in full: how it is calculated, what each period brings, how sub-periods work, and how to use dasha to plan decisions and choose remedies.
Vimshottari means "one hundred and twenty" — the total span of years in this dasha cycle. It is the most widely used timing system in Vedic astrology and is described in detail in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), which presents it as the primary dasha system for the present age. It is based on the Moon's nakshatra at the moment of birth.
Your life is divided into major planetary periods called Mahadashas, each ruled by one of the nine grahas. Within each Mahadasha are sub-periods called Antardashas (also Bhukti), and within those, finer Pratyantardashas. The planet ruling a period activates its significations — its houses, its strength, and its relationships with other planets — during that stretch of time.
This is why timing matters. A powerful Raj Yoga sits quietly in your chart until the dasha of the planets forming it begins. Then it delivers. This is the single most important concept an experienced astrologer in Patna uses to make predictions land.
The cycle always runs in the same order, and each planet rules three of the 27 nakshatras:

Each nakshatra spans 13 degrees 20 minutes of the zodiac. The portion of the nakshatra the Moon has not yet travelled at birth decides how much of the first Mahadasha remains — this is called the balance of dasha (दशा शेष).
Example: Rohini runs from 10 degrees to 23 degrees 20 minutes of Taurus and is ruled by the Moon (10 years). If the Moon is at about 16 degrees 40 minutes of Taurus at birth, it is exactly halfway through Rohini. So half of the Moon's 10 years — 5 years of Moon Mahadasha — remain at birth. After that comes Mars (7 years), then Rahu (18 years), and so on.
Because the Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, even a 10-minute error in birth time can shift your dasha dates by several weeks or months. This is why accurate birth time — and birth time rectification when it is uncertain — matters so much.
The nature of a Mahadasha depends on how that planet is placed in your chart — its house, sign, lordship, aspects and strength in the Navamsha (D9). Still, each graha has a broad signature.
Authority, recognition, government, and father. A strong Sun brings promotion and status — often relevant to government job yogas. A weak Sun can bring ego clashes and heart or eye-related concerns.
Emotions, mind, mother, and the public. Well-placed, it brings emotional fulfilment, popularity, and comfort. Afflicted, it can bring mood swings and instability.
Energy, courage, property, siblings, and competition. Strong for defence, police, sports, engineering, or real estate — but it can bring conflict and accidents if Mars is poorly placed. Relevant to Mangal Dosha if Mars is also delaying marriage.
Rahu magnifies desires, brings sudden gains and sudden losses, foreign connections, technology and unconventional paths. A well-directed Rahu period can bring a dramatic rise; a scattered one brings confusion and anxiety.
The great benefic. Wisdom, children, wealth, marriage, and spiritual growth flourish when Jupiter is strong. This is often when people marry, have children, or find a guru.
The longest and most transformative period. Saturn demands discipline and rewards patient effort. It can overlap with Shani Sade Sati to create a doubly significant phase. Hard work during Saturn's dasha builds lasting foundations.
Intellect, communication, business, and education. Excellent for students, traders, writers, accountants and analysts. A strong Mercury dasha is often when careers in commerce or teaching take off.
The longest period — love, marriage, luxury, art, vehicles and comfort. A strong Venus period is frequently when people experience the most enjoyable years of their lives.
Detachment, spirituality, research and sudden changes. Ketu can bring introspection and moksha-oriented growth, but also unexpected endings.
A 19-year Saturn Mahadasha is not uniformly the same for two decades. Within it, each planet takes a turn as the Antardasha lord, starting with the Mahadasha lord itself. The length of each Antardasha is calculated as:
Mahadasha years multiplied by Antardasha years, divided by 120.

So you might have Saturn–Jupiter (often favourable for growth and family) followed by Saturn–Mars (often stressful). The relationship between the Mahadasha and Antardasha lords — natural friendship, mutual house positions (shadashtak 6/8 placements are difficult), and houses ruled — produces the specific events of any year.

Your current Mahadasha is calculated from the nakshatra and exact degree of the Moon at birth. You need your date, exact time and place of birth. Most kundali software shows a dasha table, but small errors in birth time can shift period start dates by months, so it is worth verifying the table against past life events with an astrologer.
No Mahadasha is good or bad for everyone. Jupiter and Venus periods are traditionally considered benefic, but a Saturn or Rahu period can bring great success if that planet is well placed or rules good houses for your ascendant. The planet's lordship, dignity, house placement, aspects and the divisional charts decide the result.
An Antardasha's length is the Mahadasha years multiplied by the Antardasha planet's years, divided by 120. For example, Jupiter Mahadasha with Jupiter Antardasha is 16 times 16 divided by 120, about 2 years 1 month 18 days. Shorter sub-periods like Sun or Moon Antardashas can last well under a year.
Dasha Sandhi is the junction between two Mahadashas, roughly the last few months of one period and the first few of the next. It is often a phase of transition, uncertainty or change in direction, especially when the two planets are unfriendly. Traditional advice is to avoid major risky decisions during this junction where possible.
Yes, in traditional practice remedies are most useful when they target the planet whose period is running. Strengthening a weak benefic dasha lord or pacifying a troublesome one is more focused than random rituals. Gemstones in particular should only be worn after chart analysis, since strengthening the wrong planet can make a difficult period harder.
