Searching for choghadiya today or Rahu Kaal before a journey, a shop opening or a bank visit is now a daily habit for many families in Patna, Muzaffarpur and Bhagalpur. Both are simple tools from the Panchang that divide the day into good and bad segments. This guide explains the seven choghadiyas — Amrit, Shubh, Labh, Char, Udveg, Kaal and Rog — how they are calculated from sunrise and sunset, the weekday-wise Rahu Kaal table, related periods like Yamaganda, Gulika, Abhijit Muhurat and Bhadra, why Patna's sunrise matters, and when a choghadiya is enough versus when you need a proper muhurat.
Quick answer: Choghadiya (चौघड़िया) divides daytime and night-time into eight equal parts each; Amrit, Shubh and Labh are auspicious, Char is neutral-good, and Udveg, Kaal and Rog are avoided. Rahu Kaal is one of the eight daytime parts, fixed by weekday, and new work is not started in it. Exact clock times change daily with your city's sunrise and sunset.
| Choghadiya | Ruling planet | Nature | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amrit (अमृत) | Moon | Most auspicious | Almost all good work |
| Shubh (शुभ) | Jupiter | Auspicious | Marriage talks, puja, education, ceremonies |
| Labh (लाभ) | Mercury | Auspicious | Business, trade, study, contracts |
| Char (चर) | Venus | Good, "moving" | Travel, vehicles, moving goods |
| Udveg (उद्वेग) | Sun | Inauspicious | Only government-related tasks, by some traditions |
| Kaal (काल) | Saturn | Inauspicious | Avoid new work; some use it for collecting dues |
| Rog (रोग) | Mars | Inauspicious | Avoid; some use it for disputes or debates |
The word comes from "chau" (four) and "ghadi" (a Vedic time unit of 24 minutes). One choghadiya is roughly four ghadis, about 96 minutes, though the real length varies with the season. The system is especially popular in Gujarat, Rajasthan and among trading communities, and it has become widely used across Bihar for quick decisions — opening the shop's shutter, leaving for a train, or making a purchase on Dhanteras.
It is a practical, everyday tool. It does not look at tithi, nakshatra or your personal chart. That is both its strength (anyone can use it) and its limit.
Example: on a summer day in Patna with a sunrise near 5:00 AM and a sunset near 6:45 PM, daytime is about 13 hours 45 minutes, so each day choghadiya is about 103 minutes. In winter, with a shorter day, each part shrinks to about 80-85 minutes.
| Day | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sunday | Udveg | Char | Labh | Amrit | Kaal | Shubh | Rog | Udveg |
| Monday | Amrit | Kaal | Shubh | Rog | Udveg | Char | Labh | Amrit |
| Tuesday | Rog | Udveg | Char | Labh | Amrit | Kaal | Shubh | Rog |
| Wednesday | Labh | Amrit | Kaal | Shubh | Rog | Udveg | Char | Labh |
| Thursday | Shubh | Rog | Udveg | Char | Labh | Amrit | Kaal | Shubh |
| Friday | Char | Labh | Amrit | Kaal | Shubh | Rog | Udveg | Char |
| Saturday | Kaal | Shubh | Rog | Udveg | Char | Labh | Amrit | Kaal |
| Night of | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sunday | Shubh | Amrit | Char | Rog | Kaal | Labh | Udveg | Shubh |
| Monday | Char | Rog | Kaal | Labh | Udveg | Shubh | Amrit | Char |
| Tuesday | Kaal | Labh | Udveg | Shubh | Amrit | Char | Rog | Kaal |
| Wednesday | Udveg | Shubh | Amrit | Char | Rog | Kaal | Labh | Udveg |
| Thursday | Amrit | Char | Rog | Kaal | Labh | Udveg | Shubh | Amrit |

| Saturday | Labh | Udveg | Shubh | Amrit | Char | Rog | Kaal | Labh |
Remember that the Vedic day runs from sunrise to sunrise, so "Monday night" means the night after Monday's sunset, up to Tuesday's sunrise.
Rahu Kaal (राहु काल) is one of the eight equal parts of daytime, ruled by Rahu. It is widely followed in South India and has become just as common in North India, including Bihar. New beginnings — travel, signing, buying, starting a puja for a new venture — are avoided in it.
| Weekday | Rahu Kaal segment (of 8) | Approx. time if sunrise 6 AM, sunset 6 PM |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | 2nd | 7:30 – 9:00 AM |
| Tuesday | 7th | 3:00 – 4:30 PM |
| Wednesday | 5th | 12:00 – 1:30 PM |
| Thursday | 6th | 1:30 – 3:00 PM |
| Friday | 4th | 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM |
| Saturday | 3rd | 9:00 – 10:30 AM |
| Sunday | 8th | 4:30 – 6:00 PM |
The clock times in the last column are only a teaching reference for an idealised 12-hour day. Real Rahu Kaal in Patna will differ — see the sunrise section below. A popular English memory line, "Mother Saw Father Wearing The Turban Suddenly", gives the order Monday, Saturday, Friday, Wednesday, Thursday, Tuesday, Sunday for segments 2 to 8.
Two more daytime segments are checked alongside Rahu Kaal:
| Weekday | Yamaganda segment | Gulika segment |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday | 5th | 7th |
| Monday | 4th | 6th |
| Tuesday | 3rd | 5th |
| Wednesday | 2nd | 4th |
| Thursday | 1st | 3rd |
| Friday | 7th | 2nd |
| Saturday | 6th | 1st |
The daytime is also divided into 15 muhurtas. The 8th muhurta, Abhijit (अभिजित), falls around local midday and lasts about 48 minutes, roughly 24 minutes on either side of local noon. Tradition holds that Abhijit can support most work when nothing better is available, linked to the story of Lord Vishnu's protection. Many Panchang traditions exclude Abhijit on Wednesday.
Patna lies east of the 82.5 degree meridian used for Indian Standard Time, so local noon in Patna comes a little before 12:00 IST — usually between about 11:35 AM and 12:05 PM depending on the season. That is why Abhijit Muhurat in Patna starts earlier than in Delhi or Mumbai.
Bhadra (भद्रा) is the period of Vishti karana, one of the eleven karanas (half-tithis). It occurs regularly in both lunar fortnights and is avoided for auspicious ceremonies. Families in Bihar check it carefully for Raksha Bandhan and Holika Dahan, where the ritual is moved outside Bhadra. Classical Muhurta texts note that Bhadra's effect depends on where it "resides" — on earth, in heaven or in the netherworld — based on the Moon's sign, with Bhadra on earth (Moon in Cancer, Leo, Aquarius or Pisces) taken most seriously. Read more in our Holi and Holika Dahan guide.
Every value above depends on local sunrise and sunset. In Patna, sunrise is roughly around 5:00 AM in June and around 6:40 AM in early January. That has three effects:
Practical tip: use an app or Panchang that lets you set your exact city, or ask your astrologer. Don't copy timings forwarded on WhatsApp from another state.
| Situation | Choghadiya and Rahu Kaal enough? |
|---|---|
| Daily travel, a meeting, a bank visit | Yes |
| Buying small items, gold on Dhanteras | Usually yes |
| Paying a first instalment or signing a routine form | Yes |
| Shop opening or new business launch | No — full muhurat, see business and shop opening muhurat |
| Marriage | No — see Vivah Muhurat guide |
| Griha pravesh or bhoomi pujan | No — see Griha Pravesh muhurat |
| Mundan, namkaran, annaprashan | No — see Mundan muhurat |
| Surgery or medical procedures | Follow your doctor first; muhurat only within the doctor's window |
A full muhurat checks the tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana, the lagna rising at that moment, planetary combustion, Kharmas and Chaturmas, and — most importantly — the birth charts of the people involved. Choghadiya cannot do any of that.
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| Rahu Kaal is 4:30-6:00 PM every Sunday everywhere | It depends on your local sunrise and sunset |
| Kaal choghadiya means death | It simply indicates a Saturn-ruled period unfit for new beginnings |
| Choghadiya replaces the Panchang | It is a shortcut, not a full muhurat |
| Work started in Rahu Kaal always fails | It is traditionally avoided, not a guaranteed failure |

Amrit, Shubh and Labh are the three auspicious choghadiyas. Amrit suits almost every good work, Shubh suits marriage-related and religious work, and Labh suits business, trade and study. Char is good for travel and vehicles. Avoid Udveg, Kaal and Rog, and also check that your chosen window does not overlap with Rahu Kaal.
No. Rahu Kaal is one-eighth of the daytime, from sunrise to sunset, and its position depends on the weekday. Because sunrise and sunset change through the year, the clock time shifts too. In Patna it can move by more than an hour between June and January, so always use a Panchang calculated for your own city.
Traditionally, new beginnings such as a journey, signing an agreement, a purchase or a puja for a new venture are not started in Rahu Kaal. Work already in progress can continue. If a journey cannot be shifted, families in Bihar often start a little before Rahu Kaal or symbolically step out of the house earlier.
Abhijit is the eighth of the fifteen muhurtas of the day, a window of roughly 48 minutes around local midday. It is considered strong enough to support most work when no better muhurat is available. Many Panchang traditions do not use Abhijit on Wednesday, so on that day choose a good choghadiya instead.
No. Choghadiya is a quick daily tool for routine actions like travel, a meeting or a purchase. Marriage, griha pravesh, mundan, a foundation stone or a major business launch need a full muhurat that checks tithi, nakshatra, yoga, lagna and the personal charts of the people involved.
