Opening a shop, showroom, clinic, coaching centre or office is one of the biggest financial steps a family in Bihar takes. Whether it is a cloth shop on Patna's Maurya Lok side, a sweet shop in Gaya, a litchi trading godown in Muzaffarpur or a silk outlet in Bhagalpur, most owners want the udghatan (उद्घाटन, inauguration) to happen in a good muhurat (मुहूर्त). This guide explains, in practical detail, how a vyapar muhurat (व्यापार मुहूर्त) is selected — which nakshatras, tithis, weekdays and lagnas are favourable, what must be avoided, which festival days are considered self-auspicious, and how name numerology and basic shop vastu fit in.
Astrology complements, but does not replace, a sound business plan, legal registration and advice from a qualified financial adviser. A good muhurat gives a strong start; the business still runs on effort, capital and customer trust.
In Vedic astrology, the moment an activity begins is treated like the birth chart of that activity. Classical muhurat texts such as Muhurta Chintamani and the muhurat chapters of Brihat Samhita describe how the Panchang — tithi, vara (weekday), nakshatra, yoga and karana — along with the rising lagna, shape the quality of an undertaking. For a business, the key houses of this "opening chart" are:
A good muhurat aims to keep these houses strong and the 8th and 12th houses (sudden losses, expenses) free from malefic pressure.
Muhurta Chintamani groups nakshatras by nature. For buying, selling and starting trade, the following are generally preferred:
Nakshatras usually avoided for a business start are the Ugra and Tikshna groups — Bharani, Magha, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha, Purva Bhadrapada, Ardra, Ashlesha, Jyeshtha and Mula — unless the business itself is of that nature. Pushya is especially valued; when it falls on a Thursday it forms Guru Pushya Yoga, which many traders in Bihar wait for.
Favourable tithis are usually Dwitiya (2), Tritiya (3), Panchami (5), Saptami (7), Dashami (10), Ekadashi (11) and Trayodashi (13), preferably in Shukla Paksha (waxing Moon).
Avoid:
| Weekday | Ruling planet | Suitability for shop opening |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday | Sun | Fair — good for government-linked or authority businesses |
| Monday | Moon | Good — dairy, food, water, hospitality |
| Tuesday | Mars | Usually avoided for general trade |
| Wednesday | Mercury | Best — trade, accounts, communication, retail |
| Thursday | Jupiter | Very good — education, finance, consultancy |
| Friday | Venus | Very good — clothing, jewellery, cosmetics, sweets |
| Saturday | Saturn | Usually avoided; some allow it for iron, oil, machinery |
Among the 27 yogas, Vyatipata and Vaidhriti are traditionally avoided for new work. Among karanas, the most important to avoid is Vishti, commonly called Bhadra (भद्रा). In North India, Bhadra is strictly avoided for inaugurations, raksha bandhan and many auspicious starts.
The lagna changes roughly every two hours, so it fixes the exact window within a good day. For a business meant to last, sthira (fixed) lagnas — Taurus (Vrishabh), Leo (Simha), Scorpio (Vrishchik) and Aquarius (Kumbh) — are generally preferred. Dual signs are acceptable. Ideal conditions include:
Falling on Vaishakh Shukla Tritiya, usually in April or May, Akshaya Tritiya is one of the traditional abujh muhurat days — auspicious enough that many families start ventures without consulting a separate muhurat. Gold purchases, new accounts and shop openings are common on this day across Bihar.
Dhanteras falls on Kartik Krishna Trayodashi in the Purnimant calendar followed in Bihar, usually in October or November. It is considered excellent for buying metal, vehicles, equipment and for the first purchase of stock. Many shopkeepers in Patna, Gaya and Darbhanga do Dhanvantari and Kuber puja on this evening.
On Kartik Amavasya, the traders' tradition of Bahi-Khata or Chopda Pujan — worshipping new account books with Lakshmi and Ganesh — is widely followed. Although Amavasya is normally avoided, Diwali night in Pradosh Kaal with a sthira lagna is a recognised exception for wealth-related beginnings. For the detailed puja procedure, read our Diwali Lakshmi Puja muhurat guide.
Exact muhurat windows on these days depend on the local Panchang for your city and on your own chart, so confirm the timing before printing invitation cards.
A business name is called many thousands of times over its life, so numerologists treat it as a second "birth signature". Generally, the name number should be friendly to the owner's birth number and suit the nature of the trade — for example, number 5 (Mercury) for trade and communication, 6 (Venus) for fashion and luxury, 3 (Jupiter) for education and consultancy. Numbers 4 and 8 are handled carefully for retail. A good practice is to align the opening date's number with the name number as well. Our numerology for business guide explains the calculation in detail, and the numerology service can check spelling options for your signboard.
Many shops in old markets of Patna City, Muzaffarpur and Bhagalpur cannot be redesigned fully; small corrections in furniture placement and lighting are often enough. See our Vastu tips for Bihar homes and the Vastu Shastra consultation for detailed guidance.
Do:
Don't:
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| Any Wednesday is good for a shop | The weekday is only one of five Panchang limbs plus lagna |
| A good muhurat guarantees profit | Muhurat supports a good start; planning and hard work decide results |
| Amavasya is always bad for business | Diwali Amavasya is a recognised exception for Lakshmi puja and new ledgers |
| The muhurat is the same for every owner | Chandra Bala and Tara Bala make it personal |
In Bihar, business openings often cluster around Akshaya Tritiya, Dhanteras-Diwali and after Chhath, when market sentiment is strong. Traders in Mithila commonly invite a Maithil pandit for Ganesh-Lakshmi puja, while in Magadh and Bhojpur the shop is often opened with a Satyanarayan Katha. Traders around Muzaffarpur and Darbhanga often time openings to the trading season in their market. Families in Patna, Muzaffarpur and Bhagalpur regularly ask for a muhurat that fits both the Panchang and practical dates such as lease signing and GST registration.

Wednesday is traditionally the strongest day for trade because it is ruled by Mercury, the planet of commerce and accounts. Thursday and Friday are also very good, and Monday is acceptable. Tuesday and Saturday are usually avoided for a general shop, though some traditions allow Saturday for iron, oil or machinery businesses. The weekday must still be checked against tithi, nakshatra and lagna for the final muhurat.
Akshaya Tritiya is considered an abujh or self-auspicious day, so many families in Bihar start businesses on it without a separate muhurat. Even so, it is wise to avoid Rahu Kaal on that day and to choose a sound lagna for the opening ceremony. If your own chart is running a difficult dasha, a personalised check is still recommended.
Yes, in North Indian tradition Kharmas, when the Sun transits Sagittarius or Pisces, is generally avoided for new beginnings such as shop openings, griha pravesh and weddings. The same caution applies when Jupiter or Venus is combust. Routine trading in an existing business continues as normal; only the formal start or udghatan is postponed.
If a lease, government licence or franchise agreement fixes the date, choose the best available lagna and hora within that day, avoid Rahu Kaal and Bhadra, and perform a simple Ganesh and Lakshmi puja before the shutter is lifted. Traditionally a symbolic first sale can also be made later in a better muhurat. Practical deadlines matter, so do not lose a business opportunity only for a muhurat.
Yes. A general Panchang muhurat is the same for everyone, but the best opening time also respects the owner's Moon sign through Tara Bala and Chandra Bala. A muhurat lagna that falls in the 8th or 12th sign from the owner's birth Moon is usually rejected. That is why astrologers ask for date, time and place of birth before fixing the final time.
