Classical Basis of Vastu

Vastu principles are recorded in classical texts such as Mayamata, Manasara, Samarangana Sutradhara and Vishwakarma Prakash, and Vedic hymns invoke Vastoshpati, the guardian deity of the house. The Brihat Samhita of Varahamihira also has chapters on house construction. These texts deal with plot selection, orientation, room placement, proportions and rituals for laying foundations.

Understanding the Vastu Purusha Mandala

Every vastu recommendation is grounded in the Vastu Purusha Mandala (वास्तु पुरुष मंडल) — a sacred grid laid over the plot. For houses, the 81-square (9 by 9) grid is commonly used, with 45 deities presiding over different zones and Brahma at the centre (Brahmasthan). The Vastu Purusha lies with his head in the northeast and feet in the southwest.

• Best directions: North, northeast, or east-facing entrances are ideal. They invite morning sunlight, which is energising and auspicious.
• South-facing doors: these are not automatically bad, but the door should be in the correct segment (pada) of the south wall. If your home already faces south, common remedies include a Swastika or Om above the door, a bright light at the entrance, a heavy threshold (dehri), and a clear family nameplate.
• Threshold: Keep the door area clean and clutter-free. A cracked or squeaking door is considered a vastu defect — repair it promptly.
• Steps: The number of steps leading to the entrance should ideally be odd (1, 3, 5, 7).
• Avoid: a pole, tree trunk, or electricity transformer directly in front of the main door (Dwar Vedha).

Kitchen

The kitchen is the zone of Agni (fire) and should ideally be in the southeast. Northwest is the accepted second choice.

• The cook should ideally face east while cooking.
• The gas stove should not be placed against the north or northeast wall.
• Keep the sink (water) and stove (fire) apart — placing them side by side creates elemental conflict and is one of the most common vastu mistakes in Bihar homes.
• Drinking water (matka, RO purifier) belongs in the northeast or north of the kitchen.
• Colours: light yellow, orange, peach or soft red tones suit a southeast kitchen. Avoid dark blue or black.

If your kitchen is in the north or northeast (common in older Bihar constructions), place the stove in the southeast corner of the kitchen itself, use warm colours, and keep the northeast part of the kitchen light and clean.

Master Bedroom

The southwest is the zone of stability and is the ideal location for the master bedroom, especially for the head of the family.

• The head of the bed should point south (or east) — traditionally never north.
• Avoid mirrors directly opposite the bed.
• The safe or almirah with valuables should stand against the south or southwest wall, opening towards the north — considered auspicious for wealth retention.
• Do not keep a temple inside the bedroom.
• Avoid beams directly above the bed; if unavoidable, a false ceiling hides it.

Children's Room and Study

• Best located in the west or northwest; east is good for younger children.

• Place deities so that the worshipper faces east (deities face west) or north.
• Avoid placing the mandir in the bedroom, against a toilet wall, or under a staircase.
• Keep it impeccably clean; clutter here is considered highly inauspicious.
• Prefer copper, brass or silver items; avoid broken idols and torn pictures.

Bathroom and Toilets

• Northwest or west are the recommended zones; south is acceptable.
• Avoid toilets in the northeast — one of the most serious defects and very common in urban Bihar apartments built without vastu consideration.
• Septic tank: northwest is preferred; never in the northeast or southwest.

• Flood-prone north Bihar (Kosi and Gandak belts — Supaul, Saharsa, Madhepura, Darbhanga): raised plinths are a practical necessity. Vastu prefers the southwest to be higher and the northeast lower — design the plinth and drainage so water flows towards the north or east.
• Chhath on the rooftop: many Patna families offer arghya on the terrace. Keep the east and the west edges open and clean, and avoid storing junk on the roof.
