Periods to Avoid in 2026–2027

• Chaturmas — from Devshayani Ekadashi (Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi) to Dev Uthani or Prabodhini Ekadashi (Kartik Shukla Ekadashi). In 2026, Dev Uthani Ekadashi falls in the second half of November, after Diwali. Chaturmas begins again in mid-2027.
• Kharmas — when the Sun is in Sagittarius (roughly mid-December to Makar Sankranti in mid-January) and in Pisces (roughly mid-March to mid-April). These are solar periods, so they come at about the same time each year.

• Holashtak — the eight days before Holi.
• Eclipses and the days around them.
• Combustion of Jupiter or Venus — when these planets are too close to the Sun, auspicious ceremonies are generally paused. Check the Panchang for these dates.

Step-by-Step Griha Pravesh Vidhi

Before the day

1. Complete the main construction, at least the kitchen, one room, water and electricity.
2. Fix the muhurat and book the priest.
3. Clean the house thoroughly and decorate the door with a toran of mango leaves and marigold; in Mithila homes, draw aripan at the threshold.

Samagri (items)

• Copper or brass kalash, mango leaves, coconut with red cloth and mauli
• Ganesh idol or picture, Lakshmi and Vastu Purusha images if available
• Rice, roli, haldi, sandalwood, flowers, durva, betel leaves, supari

On the day

1. Sankalp — at the door, the family states the purpose with names and gotra.
2. Threshold entry — the lady of the house enters with the right foot, gently tipping a small kalash of rice with her right foot, followed by the head of the family carrying the main kalash.
3. Kalash sthapana in the north-east (Ishan) corner.
4. Ganesh puja to remove obstacles.
5. Navagraha puja for the nine planets.
6. Vastu Shanti and havan — the priest invokes Vastoshpati with the Rigvedic hymn beginning वास्तोष्पते प्रति जानीह्यस्मान् — Vastoshpate prati janihyasman — "O Lord of the dwelling, recognise and welcome us."
7. Boiling milk in the new kitchen until it overflows, then preparing kheer as the first bhog.
8. Brahmin bhojan and dakshina, followed by a meal for family and neighbours.
9. Many Bihar families add Satyanarayan Katha on the same day or the next Purnima.

Mantra for the day ॐ गं गणपतये नमः — Om Gam Ganapataye Namah — "Salutations to Lord Ganesha, remover of obstacles." Chant 108 times during the puja.
