A muhurat is an auspicious moment selected using Muhurta Shastra, the branch of Vedic astrology dedicated to electing favourable times for important events. A Vivah Muhurat is the specific window chosen for the wedding ceremony — calculated so that the planetary positions at that moment support a long, harmonious, and prosperous marriage.
Choosing a muhurat is not superstition dressed up as tradition; it is the application of the same astrological logic used in chart reading, applied forward in time to select a favourable moment rather than merely interpret a given one.
A genuine Vivah Muhurat balances several elements of the panchang (the Vedic almanac):
Certain tithis are considered auspicious for marriage — generally the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, 11th, and 13th of the lunar fortnight. The Rikta tithis (4th, 9th, 14th) and Amavasya (new moon) are avoided.
The Moon's nakshatra on the wedding day is one of the most important factors. Auspicious marriage nakshatras include Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, and Revati.
