In Bihar, fixing a wedding date is never a matter of picking a convenient weekend. The Vivah Muhurat (विवाह मुहूर्त) — the astrologically auspicious window for marriage — is treated as a foundation stone for the couple's entire married life. From the grand weddings of Patna to the traditional ceremonies of Mithila, families consult an astrologer or the Panchang before printing a single invitation card. This guide explains how a marriage muhurat is actually calculated, why certain months are avoided, what the 2026-2027 season looks like, and what to prepare before you approach an astrologer.
A muhurat is an auspicious moment selected using Muhurta Shastra, the branch of Vedic astrology dedicated to electing favourable times for important events. A Vivah Muhurat is the specific window chosen for the wedding ceremony — especially the kanyadaan, saat phere and sindoordaan — calculated so that the planetary positions at that moment support a long, harmonious, and prosperous marriage.
The classical reference most North Indian astrologers use is Muhurta Chintamani, whose Vivah Prakaran (chapter on marriage) lays out the tithis, nakshatras, lagnas and doshas to consider. Choosing a muhurat applies the same astrological logic used in chart reading, but forward in time — to select a favourable moment rather than interpret a given one.
A genuine Vivah Muhurat balances the five limbs of the Panchang (पंचांग) — tithi, vaar, nakshatra, yoga and karana — plus the lagna and the couple's own charts.
Auspicious tithis are generally the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, 11th, and 13th of the lunar fortnight, with Shukla Paksha preferred. The Rikta tithis (4th, 9th, 14th) and Amavasya are avoided.
The Moon's nakshatra on the wedding day is one of the most important factors. The classical marriage nakshatras are Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, and Revati. The astrologer also checks that the nakshatra is favourable relative to the bride's and groom's birth stars (Tara Bala).
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are generally favoured. Tuesday (Mars) and Saturday (Saturn) are usually avoided; Sunday is acceptable in some traditions.
Marriages are traditionally performed when the Sun is in favourable signs, and avoided while it transits Sagittarius (Dhanu) and Pisces (Meena) — the Kharmas periods discussed below.
The rising sign at the ceremony moment must be strong and unafflicted, with benefics in kendras, and the 7th house (marriage) and 8th house (longevity of the union) free from malefics. Mars in the 8th of the muhurat lagna is specifically avoided.
The astrologer rules out Bhadra (Vishti karana), inauspicious yogas such as Vyatipata and Vaidhriti, eclipse periods, and Rahu Kaal during key rituals.
A specifically North Indian practice, widely followed in Bihar:

When Guru Bal is weak, families traditionally perform Jupiter worship (Brihaspati puja, yellow daan on Thursdays) rather than reject an otherwise excellent date or match.
When the Sun transits Sagittarius (about mid-December to mid-January) and Pisces (about mid-March to mid-April), the period is called Kharmas (खरमास). Weddings, griha pravesh and other auspicious ceremonies are suspended across Bihar. The four holy months when Lord Vishnu is believed to be in yogic sleep — from Devshayani Ekadashi (Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi, around July) to Devuthani / Prabodhini Ekadashi (Kartik Shukla Ekadashi, around November) — are traditionally free of marriages. Weddings resume after Devuthani and Tulsi Vivah, which is why the Bihar wedding season peaks from late November.
The intercalary lunar month added roughly every three years to align lunar and solar calendars is considered unsuitable for marriages.
When Venus or Jupiter is asta (combust — too close to the Sun to be visible), marriages are avoided. Venus and Jupiter are the two great significators of marriage, so their combustion is taken seriously. This subtle factor is often missed by general calendars.

Exact muhurat dates and clock times depend on the Panchang for Patna (or your local city), any Venus or Jupiter combustion in that year, and — most importantly — the couple's own charts. Treat this table as a planning guide, not a list of final dates.
Printed Panchangs and online lists give general auspicious dates. But the best muhurat is chosen in relation to the couple's own birth charts:
A date that is excellent in general may be merely average for a particular couple. Ideally the muhurat is chosen after the marriage compatibility analysis is complete — including Guna Milan and Ashtakoot matching, Mangal Dosha and Nadi Dosha checks. If either chart has Mars-related issues, a Mangal Dosha analysis comes first.
When a fully clean lagna is not available on a chosen day, North Indian tradition accepts Godhuli Bela — the twilight around sunset when cattle return home — as an auspicious window for the ceremony. It is widely used in Bihar, but Bhadra and major doshas are still checked.

Weddings resume after Devuthani or Prabodhini Ekadashi, the Kartik Shukla Ekadashi that ends Chaturmas, which falls in November 2026. The season runs through late November and early December, pauses during Kharmas from mid-December to mid-January, resumes after Makar Sankranti, and pauses again for Kharmas from mid-March to mid-April 2027. Exact dates depend on the local Panchang.
Kharmas is the period when the Sun transits Sagittarius (Dhanu) or Pisces (Meena), both signs ruled by Jupiter. Traditional Muhurta texts treat this solar period as unsuitable for marriage, griha pravesh and similar ceremonies. Weddings, mundan and housewarmings are paused until the Sun moves into Capricorn or Aries.
Guru Bal is the strength of Jupiter's transit counted from the bride's Moon sign. Jupiter transiting the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th or 11th sign from her Moon is considered favourable. Similarly Surya Bal is checked for the groom and Chandra Bal for both. If the bal is weak, astrologers usually suggest specific worship rather than cancelling a good match.
Yes. Godhuli, the twilight time around sunset when cattle return home, is a traditional fallback used in North India when a fully clean lagna is not available on the chosen day. It is widely accepted in Bihar weddings, but it is still checked against Bhadra, the bride and groom's charts and other major doshas.
Vivah Panchami celebrates the marriage of Ram and Sita and is a major festival in Sitamarhi, Janakpur and across Mithila. Interestingly, some Mithila families prefer not to fix their own daughter's wedding on this day because of the hardships in Sita's married life.
