Every nakshatra is assigned to one of three Nadis, each linked with an Ayurvedic constitution:

• Aadi Nadi (आदि नाड़ी) — Vata, the air or wind constitution
• Madhya Nadi (मध्य नाड़ी) — Pitta, the fire or bile constitution
• Antya Nadi (अन्त्य नाड़ी) — Kapha, the water or phlegm constitution

When bride and groom fall under the same Nadi, Nadi Dosha forms and 0 of 8 points are given. Different Nadis receive the full 8.

A Worked Example

Suppose the boy's Moon is in Rohini and the girl's Moon is in Shravana. Both nakshatras belong to Antya Nadi, so an app will show "Nadi 0/8 — Dosha". But look closer: Rohini lies in Taurus, ruled by Venus, and Shravana lies in Capricorn, ruled by Saturn. Venus and Saturn are mutual friends in classical astrology, so many traditions treat this Nadi Dosha as neutralised. Now take a boy in Ashwini and a girl in Ardra — both Aadi Nadi, with Moon signs Aries and Gemini ruled by Mars and Mercury, which are not friendly. Here no simple parihara applies, and the full chart and remedies must be considered. The same "0/8" can therefore mean two very different things.

Nadi Dosha vs Bhakoot Dosha

Families often confuse the two. Nadi Dosha depends on the nakshatras and is linked to health and progeny. Bhakoot Dosha (7 points) depends on the relative position of the two Moon signs — the 2-12, 6-8, and 5-9 combinations — and is linked to finances, harmony, and family growth. Both have their own cancellation rules, and a match can have one without the other. When both are present and uncancelled, the match needs especially careful judgement.

Classical Basis

The Ashtakoot system and its point weights are described in Muhurta Chintamani and other matching and muhurta literature, and the cancellation (parihara) verses are quoted in traditional matching manuals used by pandits across North India. Different regional traditions list slightly different exceptions, which is why two pandits sometimes disagree on the same pair of charts.

Why Nadi Is Considered So Important

Nadi relates to health, vitality, physical compatibility, and the well-being of future children. Traditional texts associate same-Nadi matches with:

• Concerns around conception or the health of children
• Health issues for one or both partners
• A lack of balance in the couple's combined constitution

The logic is Ayurvedic: two people of the same dominant dosha may amplify the same imbalance. Among the three types, Madhya Nadi Dosha (same Pitta Nadi) is traditionally regarded as the most serious.

The Cancellation Rules Most People Never Check

Classical texts give clear conditions under which Nadi Dosha is cancelled or rendered ineffective (Nadi Dosha Parihara or Bhanga):

1. Same Moon sign (Rashi) but different nakshatras — cancelled.
2. Same nakshatra but different padas (quarters) — cancelled.
3. Same nakshatra but different Moon signs — possible for nakshatras that span two signs (such as Krittika, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Dhanishta, and Purva Bhadrapada); cancellation applies.
4. Same Rashi lord, or Rashi lords who are mutual friends — neutralised.
5. Strong Jupiter or other benefics influencing the 5th and 7th houses — mitigates.
6. High overall score — many pandits treat a strong total with good Bhakoot and Graha Maitri as reducing the weight of Nadi.

In a large share of "same Nadi" cases, one of these cancellations applies — the alliance was never genuinely flawed on Nadi grounds.

Effects When the Dosha Is Genuine

Where a careful reading confirms an uncancelled Nadi Dosha, tradition associates it with:

• Health — the couple may share similar weaknesses, so preventive care matters.
• Children — the 5th house of both charts is studied closely.
• Temperament — two people of the same constitution may react the same way under stress.

These are tendencies to plan for, not certainties.

Remedies When Nadi Dosha Is Genuinely Present

1. Mahamrityunjaya Jaap

The principal remedy:

Meaning: We worship the three-eyed Lord Shiva who nourishes all; may he free us from death as a ripe fruit is freed from its vine.

• When: Begin on a Monday, before the wedding.
• Count: 108 daily by the couple or family; for a formal anushthan, priests often complete 1.25 lakh recitations.
• Items: Shivling abhishek with milk and Ganga jal, bel patra, white flowers, a ghee diya.

2. Nadi Dosha Nivaran Puja

A dedicated puja, usually before the wedding:

1. Sankalpa naming both partners and their gotras.
2. Ganesh and Navagraha Puja.
3. Rudrabhishek on a Shivling.
4. Mahamrityunjaya havan with ghee, black sesame, and durva.
5. Daan as advised.

3. Daan (Donation)

Grain, a cow (Godaan), gold, clothes, or food to Brahmins and the needy — chosen from the charts.

4. Shiva-Parvati Worship

Monday worship of Shiva and Parvati together, especially in Shravan, is the traditional prayer for a healthy union.
