Guna Milan Explained: How 36-Point Kundali Matching Works in Bihar

When a marriage alliance is discussed in any Bihar household — whether in Patna, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur or a village in Madhubani — the first question that follows is almost always: "Kitne gun mile?" ("How many gunas matched?"). The Guna Milan (गुण मिलान) score, out of 36 points, has become the single most quoted number in arranged marriages across Mithila, Bhojpur, Magadh and Anga. Yet few families understand what those 36 points represent, which of them matter most, and why a high score alone does not guarantee a happy marriage.

This guide explains the complete Ashtakoot (अष्टकूट) Guna Milan system — the eight-fold compatibility test at the heart of Vedic kundali matching — in plain language.

What Is Guna Milan?

Guna Milan (also spelled Gun Milan) is the traditional method of comparing the birth charts of a prospective bride and groom to assess marital compatibility. It is based on the Moon (चन्द्र, Chandra) — its sign (rashi) and its nakshatra (birth star) — in each chart. The rules are given in classical works on muhurat and marriage such as Muhurta Chintamani, in the chapter on matching (melapaka). The system is called Ashtakoot — ashta (eight) and koot (aspect) — because it measures compatibility across eight factors. Each carries a maximum number of points, totalling 36 gunas.

The Eight Koots Explained

1. Varna (1 point)

Varna measures spiritual and ego compatibility. Moon signs are grouped into four varnas: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces (Brahmin); Aries, Leo, Sagittarius (Kshatriya); Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn (Vaishya); Gemini, Libra, Aquarius (Shudra). This has nothing to do with social caste — it is a symbolic classification of temperament. The point is awarded when the groom's varna is equal to or higher than the bride's.

2. Vashya (2 points)

Vashya assesses magnetic attraction and natural give-and-take. Moon signs are grouped as Manav (human), Chatushpad (quadruped), Jalachar (water-dwelling), Vanachar (wild — Leo) and Keet (insect — Scorpio). Same or friendly groups score higher.

3. Tara / Dina (3 points)

Count the nakshatras from the bride's star to the groom's, and from the groom's to the bride's. Divide each count by 9; remainders of 3 (Vipat), 5 (Pratyak) and 7 (Vadha) are inauspicious, the rest auspicious. Points are given for each direction that is auspicious.

4. Yoni (4 points)

Each nakshatra is assigned one of fourteen animals — horse, elephant, sheep, serpent, dog, cat, rat, cow, buffalo, tiger, deer, monkey, mongoose and lion. The same animal scores full points; natural enemies such as cat-rat, cow-tiger, serpent-mongoose, horse-buffalo, elephant-lion, sheep-monkey and dog-deer score zero.

5. Graha Maitri (5 points)

Graha Maitri compares the lords of the two Moon signs. If the lords are friends or the same planet, the couple tends to share outlook and understanding. Since friendship is the foundation of a lasting marriage, this koot carries real weight — and when Graha Maitri is strong, several other doshas are softened.

6. Gana (6 points)

Gana classifies each nakshatra as Deva (divine), Manushya (human) or Rakshasa (fierce) — describing temperament rather than morality. Same-gana matches are harmonious; Deva-Rakshasa and Manushya-Rakshasa pairings score low and may show friction in temperament.

7. Bhakoot (7 points)

Bhakoot (also Rashi Koot) examines the distance between the two Moon signs. The combinations 2-12, 5-9 and 6-8 (Shadashtak) create Bhakoot Dosha and score zero; all others score 7. It is linked with finances, emotional bonding and family welfare.

8. Nadi (8 points)

Nadi carries the highest weight. Each nakshatra belongs to Aadi (Vata), Madhya (Pitta) or Antya (Kapha) Nadi. Why a High Score Alone Is Not Enough

Here is what many families in Bihar are never told: the 36-point score is only the first layer of a proper marriage analysis. A couple can score 32 and still face serious challenges, while another scoring 20 may enjoy a deeply harmonious life. Guna Milan is based almost entirely on the Moon — it does not account for:

• The 7th house and its lord in both charts — the house of marriage and the spouse.
• Venus (शुक्र) — the significator of love and marriage — and Jupiter, traditionally a significator of the husband in a woman's chart.
• The Navamsha (D9) chart — the most important divisional chart for marriage.
• Dasha and transit timing — when marriage and marital events unfold.
• Longevity and health indicators — the 8th house is also reviewed in a careful match.

Bhakoot and Nadi Dosha: Cancellations (Dosha Parihara)

Almost every dosha in Guna Milan has classical cancellation conditions. Checking them is essential before rejecting a match.

Commonly done as 1.25 lakh jaap by priests, or 108 daily by the couple's families for a fixed period.
2. Daan (donation) — grain, cloth or gold as advised for Nadi Dosha; donations to Brahmins and the needy for Bhakoot Dosha.
3. Graha shanti for the Moon-sign lords involved.
4. Shiva-Parvati puja on Mondays, and Gauri puja by the bride before marriage.
