Online kundali matching for Bihar marriages has become the standard practice for families across Patna, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, Gaya, and every district in between. What was once a face-to-face ritual at the family pandit's home — where both sets of parents sat together with the birth details of the prospective bride and groom — now happens routinely via video call, WhatsApp, and email. This shift has made the process more accessible, but it has also created confusion: many families now rely on free apps that generate an automated score without any human interpretation. This guide explains how कुंडली मिलान (Kundali Milan) actually works, what each part means, and why genuine interpretation matters before you say yes to a रिश्ता (rishta).
Kundali matching compares the birth charts of two people to judge marital harmony, health, family life, and longevity of the bond. The best-known part is Ashtakoot Guna Milan, described in Muhurta texts such as Muhurta Chintamani, which list the eight koots, their points, and the exceptions. Classical works on natal astrology such as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) add the deeper layer: the 7th house, its lord, Venus, Jupiter, and the Navamsha (D9) chart, which describe what each person brings to the marriage.
So a complete match has two halves:
Apps do only the first half. A trained astrologer does both.
Vedic kundali matching uses the Ashtakoot system (Ashta = eight, Koot = group), which evaluates compatibility across eight dimensions, totalling 36 Gunas (points). The match is assessed by comparing the Moon signs (Rashi) and Moon constellations (Nakshatra) of the bride and groom.
| Koot | What It Measures | Max Points |
|---|---|---|
| Varna (वर्ण) | Spiritual compatibility, ego balance | 1 |
| Vashya (वश्य) | Mutual attraction, influence | 2 |
| Tara (तारा) | Health and wellbeing after marriage | 3 |
| Yoni (योनि) | Physical and instinctive compatibility | 4 |
| Graha Maitri (ग्रह मैत्री) | Mental compatibility, friendship of Moon-sign lords | 5 |
| Gana (गण) | Temperament compatibility | 6 |
| Bhakoot (भकूट) | Emotional bond, family prosperity | 7 |
| Nadi (नाड़ी) | Health of progeny, physiological compatibility | 8 |
The score achieved out of 36 is your Guna Milan score. For a koot-by-koot deep dive, read our guide to Guna Milan and the Ashtakoot system.
The generally accepted guidelines:
| Score | Traditional Reading | What to Do Next |
|---|---|---|
| Below 18 | Weak match | Usually not advised unless strong chart factors compensate |
| 18 to 24 | Acceptable | Check Nadi, Bhakoot and Mangal Dosha carefully |
| 25 to 32 | Good | Confirm 7th house and D9 strength |
| 33 to 36 | Excellent and rare | Still check doshas and dasha timing |
Here is the critical point most automated apps miss: the score alone does not determine compatibility. A couple with 28 points but an uncancelled Nadi Dosha may need more care than a couple with 22 points and no major doshas. The weights of individual koots and the presence of cancellation factors must be assessed by an experienced astrologer.
Nadi carries the highest weight (8 points) and is traditionally linked to the health of the couple's future children and overall physical compatibility. There are three Nadis:
If bride and groom belong to the same Nadi, they score zero points here, and the condition is called नाड़ी दोष (Nadi Dosha). The traditional concern is difficulty in conception or health challenges in the family.
Commonly cited cancellations of Nadi Dosha:
These cancellations require manual assessment. Our detailed post on Nadi Dosha in kundali matching covers the exceptions and shanti remedies.
Bhakoot (7 points) looks at the distance between the two Moon signs. Three relationships score zero and form Bhakoot Dosha:
Bhakoot Dosha is commonly considered cancelled when the Moon-sign lords of both partners are the same planet or are natural friends, or when Nadi is favourable. Again, this needs a human check.
Gana (6 points) classifies people into three temperaments:
Same Gana scores full or near-full points. Deva with Manushya is generally workable. Deva with Rakshasa scores lowest and is called Gana Dosha — it can show friction in communication, with one partner finding the other too intense or too passive. Point tables differ slightly between traditions, and Gana Dosha is often eased by good Graha Maitri and Bhakoot scores.
मांगलिक दोष (Mangalik Dosha) is not part of the 36 gunas, yet in Bihar it is the first question most families ask. It arises when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, judged from the ascendant, Moon and Venus. Many apps flag almost half of all charts as Mangalik because they ignore exceptions such as Mars in its own or exalted sign, benefic aspects, or both partners being Mangalik. Read the full explanation in our Mangal Dosha and marriage guide, or book a dedicated Mangal Dosha analysis.
The Ashtakoot system assesses Moon sign and Nakshatra compatibility only. It does not assess:
A thorough kundali matching for Bihar marriages addresses all of these layers.

Kundali matching in Bihar sits inside rich local customs. In Mithila (Darbhanga, Madhubani, Sitamarhi, Supaul), many families still consult the traditional Panji genealogical records maintained by Panjikars alongside the kundali, and the historic Saurath Sabha gathering in Madhubani district is a well-known marriage-alliance tradition. In Magadh (Patna, Gaya, Nalanda, Jehanabad) and Bhojpur (Ara, Buxar, Rohtas), the family pandit traditionally writes the match result, and many families now want a second, detailed opinion when the boy or girl works outside Bihar.
Because Bihari families are now spread across Delhi, Bengaluru, Pune, the Gulf and beyond, online matching lets both sides participate from anywhere. Consultations are available in Hindi, with Maithili and Bhojpuri-speaking families welcome. Families in Darbhanga, Madhubani and Muzaffarpur regularly use this service when the alliance is being discussed across cities.
Once the match is approved, the next step is choosing a date — see our guide on Vivah Muhurat and marriage dates. Many Mithila families also look to Vivah Panchami, the festival of the divine marriage of Ram and Sita, celebrated with great devotion in Sitamarhi and Janakpur.
If the birth time of either party is unknown, this should be flagged clearly, because the ascendant — and therefore Mangal Dosha, the 7th house and D9 — changes with time. Birth time rectification or prashna (horary) methods can help in such cases.
Do:
Don't:
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| 36 out of 36 means a perfect marriage | The score is one layer; chart strength and dasha matter as much |
| Every Mangalik must marry a Mangalik | Many Mangal Dosha cases are cancelled by classical exceptions |
| Online matching is less reliable | Reliability depends on data and the astrologer, not the medium |
| Nadi Dosha means no children | It is a caution with several recognised exceptions |

Yes, when a qualified astrologer prepares and interprets both charts. Accuracy depends on correct birth date, exact birth time and place, not on whether you sit in the same room. Free apps only calculate the guna score; a proper online consultation adds Mangal Dosha, Navamsha, dasha and cancellation checks, which are the parts that actually decide the recommendation.
Traditionally at least 18 out of 36 gunas are considered the minimum for proceeding. Scores between 18 and 24 are acceptable, 25 to 32 are good, and above 32 are excellent. However, the score is only a starting point. A high score with uncancelled Nadi or Bhakoot Dosha can still need caution, while a moderate score with strong charts can work well.
Basic guna milan uses the Moon sign and nakshatra, so it can sometimes be done with an approximate time if the Moon did not change nakshatra that day. But Mangal Dosha, the 7th house, Navamsha and dasha analysis all need the ascendant, which depends on exact birth time. Where time is unknown, an astrologer may suggest birth time rectification or prashna.
No. Classical tradition lists several exceptions, such as same nakshatra with different rashi, or same rashi with different nakshatra, and strong benefic support in both charts. Many families in Bihar proceed after confirming that the dosha is cancelled or mild, sometimes with a Mahamrityunjaya jaap or Nadi Dosha shanti. The decision should come after a full chart review.
Send the full name, date of birth, exact time of birth and place of birth for both the boy and the girl. Mention the source of the birth time, such as a hospital record or family memory. If you already have handwritten kundalis from a family pandit, share clear photos of them too, so both calculations can be compared.
