Pati-patni kalah (पति-पत्नी कलह) — repeated quarrels, coldness, ego clashes or distance between husband and wife — is one of the most common reasons families in Bihar seek astrological advice. Sometimes the problem starts soon after marriage; sometimes a happy couple suddenly begins fighting after ten years. This guide explains how Vedic astrology reads marital discord in a kundali, which planetary periods tend to trigger it, the traditional remedies such as Uma-Maheshwar Puja, and — just as important — practical steps couples can take at home.
Astrology can show stress periods and temperament differences, but it is not a substitute for marriage counselling, medical care for depression or anxiety, or legal protection. If there is physical violence, threats, or emotional or financial abuse, please do not wait for a remedy to work. Contact the national emergency number 112 or the Women Helpline 181, reach out to trusted family, and consult a lawyer about your rights under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005. Your safety comes first; no puja or gemstone can replace it.
The 7th house is the primary house of marriage, spouse and partnership. Its sign, its lord, the planets placed in it and the aspects it receives describe the nature of the marital bond. A strong, well-aspected 7th lord supports cooperation; a 7th lord placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, or combined with malefics, can indicate friction.
Classical texts such as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) give the Navamsa special weight for marriage. A promise of a stable marriage in the main chart can be weakened by an afflicted Navamsa, and vice versa. No reliable marriage analysis is complete without D9. For the basics of houses, see our 12 houses guide.
| Planet | Typical effect on marriage when afflicted | Common sign of the problem |
|---|---|---|
| Venus (शुक्र) | Reduced affection, dissatisfaction, attraction outside marriage | Emotional distance, lack of romance |
| Mars (मंगल) | Anger, dominance, sudden fights | Shouting, impulsive words |
| Saturn (शनि) | Coldness, delay, duty without warmth | Silent treatment, living like strangers |
| Rahu (राहु) | Suspicion, confusion, unconventional situations | Jealousy, phone checking, third-party interference |
| Ketu (केतु) | Detachment, disinterest | One partner withdrawing completely |
| Sun (सूर्य) | Ego clashes | Neither partner willing to bend |
| Moon (चंद्र) | Mood swings, emotional insecurity | Overreaction, hurt feelings |
Venus is the natural significator (karaka) of marriage, especially in a man's chart; Jupiter is traditionally read as the husband's significator in a woman's chart. Their strength matters as much as the 7th house itself.
When one partner has a strong, uncancelled Mangal Dosha and the other does not, Mars-type friction — impatience, anger, physical restlessness — can show up more sharply. However, many charts declared "manglik" by apps actually have cancellations. Read our detailed Mangal Dosha guide before assuming this is the cause.
These are indicators, not verdicts. Jupiter's aspect, a strong 7th lord or good Navamsa placements often soften them considerably.
Couples often say, "Everything was fine earlier." That is usually a timing question. Discord tends to surface when:
Understanding the timing helps couples stay patient — a difficult antardasha passes. Our Vimshottari Mahadasha guide and Shani Sade Sati guide explain these periods in more depth.
Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are worshipped together as the ideal couple. This puja is the most widely recommended remedy for harmony between husband and wife.
The Gauri-Shankar Rudraksha, two naturally joined beads, symbolises Shiva-Parvati unity and is traditionally worn for marital harmony. Wear it on a Monday after energising it with Shiva mantra. See our Rudraksha guide for wearing rules.
Diamond or white sapphire for Venus and red coral for Mars are sometimes suggested, but wear a gemstone only after a full chart analysis. A wrong stone can strengthen a planet that is already causing harm. A trial period of a few days is traditionally advised, and the stone should be removed if disturbances increase.
Remedies work best alongside real change. Some steps that help most couples:
Do: perform remedies with sincerity, involve both partners where possible, and respect each other's family traditions.
Don't: use astrology to blame your spouse ("your Rahu is the problem"), perform any ritual meant to control another person, or ignore abuse in the hope that a remedy will fix it.
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| Manglik partners will always fight | Many manglik charts have cancellations; temperament can be managed |
| A remedy will change the spouse overnight | Remedies support patience and harmony over time |
| Separation yoga means divorce is certain | It shows stress periods that can be handled with care |
| Only the wife should do vrat for the marriage | Both partners can and should participate |
In Bihar, Shiva-Parvati worship is deeply rooted — from the Baba Garib Nath temple in Muzaffarpur to Shiva temples across Mithila. Vivah Panchami, celebrating the marriage of Ram and Sita at Sitamarhi and Janakpur, is considered an auspicious day for couples to pray together, and Teej and Madhushravani in Mithila are dedicated to marital wellbeing. Couples from Sitamarhi, Darbhanga and Muzaffarpur often combine a Monday Shiva puja with these festivals.

No single planet is responsible. Mars in the 7th or 8th house often brings anger and arguments, Saturn creates coldness and distance, Rahu brings suspicion and misunderstanding, and an afflicted Venus reduces affection. The 7th lord, the Navamsa chart and the running dasha must be read together. A planet that looks harsh may be cancelled by Jupiter's aspect or its sign placement.
Kundali matching shows tendencies, not certainties. Guna Milan checks temperament through the Moon, while a deeper match compares the 7th house, Venus, Mars, Navamsa and upcoming dashas of both partners. A strong match reduces friction, but every marriage still needs communication, respect and effort. A low score is a reason for careful analysis, not automatic rejection.
Traditional remedies are spiritual practices, not instant fixes, so no fixed timeline can be promised. Many couples follow the Monday puja and mantra for at least 16 Mondays or 40 days. The most important part is that both partners participate sincerely and also work on communication. Results depend on the chart, the dasha and the couple's own efforts.
No serious astrologer should push a couple toward divorce based only on a chart. Separation combinations show stress points that need care during certain periods. Decisions about divorce should be made with family, a qualified marriage counsellor and a lawyer. If there is abuse or danger, personal safety comes first and help should be sought immediately.
Yes. Mantra japa, Monday fasting, Shiva-Parvati worship and charity can be done by one partner for the wellbeing of the marriage. However, remedies should never be done secretly in a way that harms trust. Small changes in one's own speech and behaviour often create the biggest shift at home.
