Few worries weigh on a Bihar family more heavily than a son or daughter whose marriage keeps getting delayed. Alliances are discussed and then fall through; horoscopes are exchanged and then rejected; engagements are fixed and then broken. There is no single age at which a marriage is "late" — it is relative to a person's circumstances and chart. Astrologically, delayed marriage refers to a pattern in the birth chart where the houses, lords, and planets governing marriage are obstructed, weakened, or scheduled to activate only later in life through the dasha system. The chart rarely says marriage will not happen — it usually says when and why it is being held back.
Classical texts such as the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Phaladeepika describe the 7th house (kalatra bhava) and its lord as the main indicators, while later practice adds the Navamsa (D9) chart and dasha-transit timing.
This is the classic cause. Saturn is the planet of restriction, patience, and time. When it sits in, aspects (Saturn aspects the 3rd, 7th, and 10th houses from itself), or rules the 7th house, it tends to postpone marriage rather than deny it — pushing it to a more mature age. Saturn-influenced marriages often happen later but can be stable and lasting once they occur. Saturn transiting over the natal Moon during Shani Sade Sati can also slow alliances for a time.
If the 7th lord is debilitated, combust (too close to the Sun), placed in a difficult house (such as the 6th, 8th, or 12th), or hemmed between malefics (papakartari), the marriage path becomes obstructed.
Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house (counted from the Lagna, and often also from the Moon and Venus) can delay marriage by causing alliances to repeatedly fall through at the matching stage.
