Walk through any village in Siwan or Gopalganj and you will see it — houses built with money earned in Riyadh, Dubai, Doha or Muscat. In Darbhanga and Madhubani, families have sons working in the Gulf and daughters studying in Canada or Australia. In Patna, coaching centres for IELTS sit beside those for BPSC. For many Bihari families, going abroad — videsh jaana (विदेश जाना) — is a serious life plan, and the most common question they bring to an astrologer is simple: Is there Videsh Yoga in my kundali, and when will it work?
This guide explains how Vedic astrology reads foreign travel and settlement, the exact houses and planets involved, how dashas time the visa and departure, and the practical and traditional remedies that support the journey.
Videsh Yoga (विदेश योग) is the general name for planetary combinations that indicate travel to, work in, or settlement in a foreign land. Classical texts such as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Phaladeepika describe the 9th and 12th houses in connection with distant journeys and living away from one's own land. Modern astrologers apply these principles to international travel, which the classical authors would have understood as travel to distant regions.
There is an important difference between three outcomes:
Each has a different signature in the chart.
| House | Role in Foreign Matters |
|---|---|
| 12th (Vyaya Bhava) | Residence in a foreign land, separation from birthplace, expenses abroad |
| 9th (Bhagya Bhava) | Long-distance journeys, higher education abroad, fortune from distant places |
| 7th (Kalatra Bhava) | Travel, foreign trade, dealings with foreigners, spouse from another place |
| 3rd (Sahaja Bhava) | Short journeys, courage to move, documentation and communication |
| 4th (Sukha Bhava) | Homeland and home comfort — an afflicted 4th can push one away from home |
| 8th (Ayu Bhava) | Sea voyages and sudden changes of residence in some traditions |
When the lords of the 9th and 12th are connected — by conjunction, mutual aspect or exchange of signs — the chart strongly suggests foreign residence. A 12th lord placed in the 9th, or a 9th lord in the 12th, is one of the most commonly seen patterns among people who settle abroad. If you are new to the houses, our guide to the 12 houses of the kundali explains each one.
The chara (movable) rashis — Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn — are associated with movement. When the Lagna, the Moon, or the 12th lord sits in a movable sign, the native tends to change places more readily.
Water signs — Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces — in the 9th or 12th were traditionally linked with crossing the sea. Pisces as the natural 12th sign is especially connected with foreign residence.
These combinations are tendencies, not guarantees. The full picture depends on strength, aspects and the dasha sequence. A chart may hold a strong yoga that never activates if its dasha does not come during working years.
The Vimshottari Dasha decides when a promise in the chart delivers. Foreign travel often happens during:
Transits then fine-tune the timing — for example, Jupiter transiting the 9th or 12th from the Lagna or Moon, or Saturn activating the 12th. Our detailed guide to the Vimshottari Mahadasha explains how these periods work.
In practical terms, a reading can show:
The 4th (education), 5th (intelligence), 9th (higher learning) and 12th (foreign land) must connect, with Jupiter and Mercury reasonably strong. Students from Patna and Bhagalpur heading to Canada, the UK, Germany or Australia should also check whether the education dasha supports completing the course. See our guide on education and competitive exam success.
Here the 6th house of service and 10th of profession join the 12th, and Saturn often plays a key role. Many families in Siwan, Gopalganj and Saran have a long history of Gulf migration; for them the important questions are contract stability, savings and health abroad rather than just the visa.
A strong 12th house, an afflicted or vacated 4th, and Rahu or the Moon linked with the 12th — combined with a long Rahu or 12th-lord dasha — show settlement. A chart may show travel but not permanent residence; this is a common source of disappointment that a careful reading can anticipate.
Foreign travel is not always beneficial. An afflicted 12th house can mean:
This is why the question is not only will I go? but also will going benefit me?
These are traditional practices that support favourable planets. They are no substitute for correct documents and lawful channels.
For Rahu
For the 9th house and Jupiter
For Saturn (long stays and work contracts)
For the Moon (travel and peace of mind abroad)
Gemstones such as Hessonite (Gomed) for Rahu are sometimes suggested, but they should be worn only after a full chart analysis and ideally on a trial basis — a wrong stone can amplify problems.

The 12th house is the main house of residence in a foreign land, supported by the 9th house of long journeys and the 7th house of travel and foreign dealings. An afflicted or vacated 4th house, which rules the homeland, also shows living away from the place of birth. Settlement is indicated when these houses connect strongly and the right dasha operates.
Rahu is the main significator of foreign lands and cultures, so Rahu in the 12th, 9th or 7th house, or its dasha, often coincides with travel abroad. But it is not automatic. Rahu needs a link with the travel houses, and the sign and aspects decide whether the experience is profitable or stressful. Many charts with prominent Rahu never go abroad.
Astrology cannot replace correct paperwork, but timing is often seen in the dasha or antardasha of the 12th lord, 9th lord, Rahu, or planets placed in those houses, supported by Jupiter or Saturn transits over the 9th or 12th. A reading can show favourable windows to apply, but genuine documents and registered agents remain essential.
Gulf employment is usually read through the 6th house of service, the 10th of career and the 12th of foreign residence, along with Saturn for labour and contracts. When these are well connected and the dasha is supportive, overseas work tends to bring savings. If the 12th is badly afflicted, expenses or health issues abroad may eat into earnings.
Remedies can strengthen weak but existing indications; they cannot create something the chart does not promise at all. If the foreign houses are only mildly connected, mantra, charity and well-timed effort may help. If the chart strongly favours the homeland, a good astrologer will say so honestly and suggest career paths that suit your stars.
