Kalsarp Dosh Nivaran puja in Bihar is one of the most requested astrological remedies across the state — in Patna, Gaya, Bhagalpur, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Vaishali, Sitamarhi, and smaller towns. Kalsarp Yoga (कालसर्प योग, also called Kalsarp Dosha) is a planetary configuration that many people carry in their birth charts, often without knowing it. This guide explains what it is, how to confirm whether you actually have it, the 12 types, the complete puja procedure with mantras and samagri, and what to expect afterwards.
Kalsarp Yoga forms in a birth chart when all seven classical planets — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn — are hemmed between the shadow planets Rahu (the serpent's head) and Ketu (the serpent's tail).
Rahu and Ketu are always exactly 180 degrees apart. If all other planets fall within the arc from Rahu to Ketu, Kalsarp Yoga is formed. The name means roughly "the time-serpent" — an image of planetary energy being constricted between two karmic points.
It is worth being honest: Kalsarp Yoga is not named in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) or other early classics. Those texts do describe Sarpa Yogas and the effects of Rahu and Ketu in each house, and later and regional traditions developed the Kalsarp concept from them. It is now widely followed in North India, including Bihar. Because of this, it must be read alongside the rest of the chart and never treated as an automatic curse.
Kalsarp Yoga is not always harmful. Many successful people have it. What it tends to produce is an intense, all-or-nothing quality to life — periods of great effort and achievement followed by sudden setbacks, recurring obstacles in particular areas, and vivid dreams (often of snakes or water).
| Situation | What it means | How it is usually treated |
|---|---|---|
| All seven planets strictly between Rahu and Ketu | Full (Purna) Kalsarp Yoga | Effects judged by houses, dasha, and chart strength |
| One planet outside the axis | Partial (Ansh) Kalsarp | Much weaker; often needs no formal puja |
| Planet conjunct Rahu or Ketu with a lower degree than the node | Considered broken by many astrologers | Read case by case |
| All planets from Ketu to Rahu (reverse direction) | Called Kalamrit Yoga by some | Effects often milder and more positive |
| Strong Jupiter in a Kendra, or strong Lagna lord | Mitigation | Effects reduced considerably |
Many online calculators flag Kalsarp without checking degrees or mitigation, which is why so many people are told they have it when they don't.
The type is named after the house Rahu occupies (Ketu is always in the opposite house):
| Type | Rahu in | Ketu in | Life areas commonly affected |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anant | 1st | 7th | Health, self-confidence, marriage |
| Kulik | 2nd | 8th | Wealth, family, speech, sudden events |
| Vasuki | 3rd | 9th | Siblings, courage, luck, father |
| Shankhapal | 4th | 10th | Mother, home, property, career |
| Padma | 5th | 11th | Children, education, gains |
| Mahapadma | 6th | 12th | Health, debts, enemies, expenses |
| Takshak | 7th | 1st | Marriage, partnerships |
| Karkotak | 8th | 2nd | Longevity worries, inheritance, family harmony |
| Shankhachur | 9th | 3rd | Fortune, religion, father, travel |
| Ghatak | 10th | 4th | Career, reputation, domestic peace |
| Vishdhar | 11th | 5th | Income, friends, children |
| Sheshnag | 12th | 6th | Expenses, foreign travel, sleep, litigation |
In Bihar consultations the types most often asked about are Anant and Takshak (marriage delay or conflict) and Ghatak (career instability).
People with an active Kalsarp Yoga commonly report:
These effects are most intense during Rahu and Ketu Mahadashas and Antardashas, and when transiting Rahu or Ketu crosses the natal Moon or Lagna. In other dashas the configuration can stay quite quiet. For a broader view of these two nodes, read our guide on Rahu-Ketu effects and remedies.
The puja is a Vedic ritual to propitiate Rahu, Ketu, and the Naga devatas, and to seek Lord Shiva's protection.
Duration: A standard Kalsarp Shanti takes about 3 to 4 hours. A full anushthan with complete japa counts is spread over several days by a team of priests.
Rahu beej mantra — traditional japa count 18,000:
ॐ भ्रां भ्रीं भ्रौं सः राहवे नमः — Om Bhraam Bhreem Bhraum Sah Rahave Namah — "Salutations to Rahu."
Ketu beej mantra — traditional japa count 17,000:
ॐ स्रां स्रीं स्रौं सः केतवे नमः — Om Sraam Sreem Sraum Sah Ketave Namah — "Salutations to Ketu."
Nag Gayatri — 108 times daily:
ॐ नवकुलाय विद्महे विषदन्ताय धीमहि तन्नो सर्पः प्रचोदयात्॥ — Om Navakulaya Vidmahe Vishadantaya Dhimahi Tanno Sarpah Prachodayat — "We meditate on the nine serpent clans; may the serpent deity guide us."
Panchakshari — the simplest and safest daily practice: ॐ नमः शिवाय (Om Namah Shivaya).
Exact dates and muhurat change every year. They should be fixed from the Panchang for your location in Bihar and from your own dasha — we do not recommend picking a date from a generic online list.
| Do | Don't |
|---|---|
| Confirm Kalsarp with full degrees and mitigation first | Accept an app's verdict without checking |
| Choose the puja date from your own chart and Panchang | Pay for repeated expensive pujas under fear |
| Continue simple mantra practice after the puja | Expect overnight results |
| Keep the puja pratima immersed in flowing water | Keep the Naga pratima at home after visarjan |
Trimbakeshwar in Maharashtra, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, is the best-known site nationally, and many Bihar families make the pilgrimage. But a properly conducted puja in Bihar is equally valid. Common choices include Vishnupad Ghat in Gaya, the Ganga ghats of Patna, Baba Garib Nath Dham in Muzaffarpur, and Ajgaivinath at Sultanganj near Bhagalpur.
Bihar also has its own living serpent-worship traditions. In the Anga region around Bhagalpur, the Bihula-Vishahari puja honours the snake goddess Mansa (Vishahari), whose story is painted in Manjusha art — families with Kalsarp often add this worship to their remedy. In Mithila, newly married women observe Madhushravani in Shravan, during which the Naga deities are worshipped daily. If you live in Bhagalpur, Darbhanga, or Muzaffarpur, these local observances can be woven into your remedy plan.
The puja is not an instant cure. Its effects, as described in tradition, are gradual:

Check whether all seven planets from the Sun to Saturn sit on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis in your birth chart. If even one planet falls outside, or a planet is conjunct Rahu or Ketu at a lower degree, many astrologers treat it as partial or broken. The houses involved, planetary strength and current dasha then decide how active it is.
A simple daily practice such as chanting Rahu and Ketu mantras, Om Namah Shivaya and the Nag Gayatri can be done at home. The full Kalsarp Shanti with sankalpa, Rahu-Ketu havan and naga pratima visarjan is best done by a qualified priest at a Shiva temple or on a riverbank, on a day chosen from your chart.
Nag Panchami, the Shukla Panchami of Shravan, is the most popular day. Amavasya, Mahashivratri, Mondays of Shravan and Saturdays are also used. The exact date and muhurat in any year should be fixed from the Panchang for your location and your own dasha, not from a generic list.
When Rahu or Ketu sits in the 1st or 7th house, known as Anant or Takshak Kalsarp, delays or friction in marriage are commonly reported. This does not mean marriage will fail. The 7th lord, Venus, the Navamsha chart and the partner's kundali must be read together before any conclusion is drawn.
Kalsarp Yoga is not described by that name in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. It developed in later and regional traditions of Jyotish and is now widely used in North India. This is one reason it should be judged carefully, together with the full chart, instead of being treated as an automatic curse.
