Shani dhaiya (शनि ढैय्या, Shani Dhaiya) is the two-and-a-half-year period when Saturn transits the 4th or 8th house from your Moon sign (rashi). Many people in Bihar know about Sade Sati but are surprised to learn that dhaiya, also called Kantak Shani or Ardhashtama / Ashtama Shani, can bring a similar sense of pressure. This guide explains what dhaiya is, how to check if you are in it, how it differs from Sade Sati, its effects, and the traditional upay (remedies) practised across Bihar.
Direct answer: Shani dhaiya runs when Saturn is in the 4th house (Ardhashtama) or 8th house (Ashtama) counted from your Moon sign. It lasts about two and a half years. As of October 2026, with Saturn in Pisces, the rashis under dhaiya are Leo (Simha) and Sagittarius (Dhanu).
| Point | Detail |
|---|---|
| What it is | Saturn's transit in the 4th or 8th from the natal Moon |
| Duration | About 2.5 years per sign |
| 4th-house dhaiya | Ardhashtama Shani — home, mother, peace of mind, property, vehicles |
| 8th-house dhaiya | Ashtama Shani — health, sudden obstacles, hidden matters, in-laws |
| Kantak Shani | Saturn in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) from the Moon; most commonly used for the 4th |
| Current rashis (Oct 2026) | Leo (8th) and Sagittarius (4th), Saturn in Pisces |
| Next change | Saturn into Aries, expected around mid-2027 — dhaiya shifts to Virgo and Capricorn |
| Main remedies | Shani mantra, Hanuman worship, Saturday daan, peepal deepak |
Saturn (शनि) takes about 29.5 years to go round the zodiac, spending roughly two and a half years in each sign. Indian tradition judges Saturn's transit from the Moon sign, because the Moon represents the mind and daily experience. Classical transit (gochar) rules — found in texts such as Phaladeepika — treat Saturn as giving good results in the 3rd, 6th and 11th from the Moon, and difficult results in several other houses, especially the 4th and 8th.
Together these two are popularly called dhaiya in North India.
Kantak (कंटक) means "thorn". Kantak Shani refers to Saturn transiting a kendra — 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th — from the Moon, which can feel like a thorn in daily life. In everyday Bihar usage, though, "Kantak Shani" is mostly used for the 4th-house transit, which overlaps with dhaiya. Some astrologers also count the 7th (partnership strain) and 10th (work pressure). The 1st from Moon is already part of Sade Sati.
Saturn entered sidereal Pisces (Meena) in late March 2025 and remains there through October 2026.
At the same time, Aquarius, Pisces and Aries Moon signs are under Sade Sati. When Saturn moves into Aries, expected around mid-2027 (retrograde motion can cause a brief return to Pisces), dhaiya will shift to Capricorn (Makara), with Saturn in the 4th, and Virgo (Kanya), with Saturn in the 8th. Always confirm exact ingress dates in your local Panchang.
| Sade Sati | Shani Dhaiya | |

| Houses from Moon | 12th, 1st, 2nd | 4th or 8th |
| Duration | About 7.5 years | About 2.5 years |
| Rashis affected at once | Three | Two |
| Main themes | Self, finances, family, mental load | Home and peace (4th) or health and obstacles (8th) |

Health concerns during any transit should be checked by a doctor — astrology complements medical care, it does not replace it.
These are traditional practices. Results depend on sincerity and the overall chart; no remedy is a guarantee.
Tradition holds that Hanuman freed Shani Dev, who promised not to trouble Hanuman's devotees. On Tuesdays and Saturdays:
Donate on Saturday, preferably in the evening:
On Saturday evening, light a mustard-oil deepak under a peepal tree, offer water mixed with a little jaggery or black til, and do seven parikramas while chanting the Shani mantra.
Saturn is the planet of karma and discipline. Being honest at work, treating workers and servants fairly, avoiding alcohol and non-vegetarian food on Saturdays, and caring for elders are considered among the most effective remedies.
Neelam (blue sapphire) should never be worn just because dhaiya is running. Wear it only after chart analysis, with a trial period, because a wrong stone can do harm. A gemstone recommendation consultation checks this properly. For broader planetary balance, see Navagraha Shanti puja.

Across Bihar — from Buxar and Ara in the Bhojpur belt to Gaya and Patna — Saturday evenings see families lighting mustard-oil lamps under peepal trees and visiting Hanuman temples. These customs are exactly the traditional dhaiya remedies, practised for generations.

As of October 2026, Saturn is transiting Pisces in the sidereal zodiac. This places Shani dhaiya on Leo (Simha) Moon sign, with Saturn in the 8th, and on Sagittarius (Dhanu) Moon sign, with Saturn in the 4th. When Saturn moves into Aries, expected around mid-2027, the dhaiya shifts to Capricorn and Virgo. Confirm exact dates in a Patna Panchang.
Dhaiya means two and a half, and it lasts roughly two and a half years — the time Saturn takes to cross one sign. Because of retrograde motion, Saturn may briefly move back into the previous sign, so the effective period can stretch by a few months at the start or end.
No. If Saturn is a yogakaraka or functional benefic for your ascendant, well placed in the birth chart, or running a favourable dasha, the dhaiya may bring hard work that ends in stable gains. It is generally heavier when Saturn is weak in the natal chart or when a difficult Saturn dasha runs at the same time.
Not automatically. Blue sapphire is one of the strongest and quickest-acting stones and can cause harm if Saturn is not favourable in your chart. It should be worn only after detailed kundali analysis, preferably after a short trial period. For most people, mantra, charity and Hanuman worship are safer remedies during dhaiya.
Sade Sati is the seven-and-a-half-year period when Saturn transits the 12th, 1st and 2nd houses from your Moon sign. Dhaiya is a separate two-and-a-half-year period when Saturn transits the 4th or 8th house from the Moon. Sade Sati affects three rashis at a time; dhaiya affects two.
