"Are you a Leo?" a friend asks, and you say yes — but your family pandit in Patna says your rashi (राशि) is Kark (Cancer). Both may be right. They are simply using two different systems. This guide explains the difference between the Moon sign used in Vedic astrology and the Sun sign popular in Western astrology, the science behind the sidereal and tropical zodiacs, what ayanamsa means, why rashifal is read from the Moon, how to find your own rashi, and a complete table of all 12 rashis with their lords and Hindi names.
When someone asks "What is your sign?", two different things can be meant:
On top of that, Western and Vedic astrology also measure the zodiac differently, which is why even the Sun sign often changes between the two.
The tropical zodiac starts at the vernal equinox — the point where the Sun crosses the celestial equator around 20-21 March. Aries is defined as beginning there, regardless of which stars lie behind it. It is a seasonal zodiac, tied to the Earth's relationship with the Sun.
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal or nirayana (निरयण) zodiac, which is tied to the fixed stars and the 27 nakshatras. Mesh (Aries) begins at a fixed point in the star background, aligned with the start of Ashwini nakshatra.
The Earth's axis wobbles slowly, completing one cycle in roughly 26,000 years. Because of this precession of the equinoxes, the equinox point slides backwards against the stars by about one degree every 72 years. Long ago the two zodiacs coincided; today they differ by roughly 24 degrees, and the gap keeps growing slowly.
The difference between the two zodiacs is called the ayanamsa. To convert a tropical position into a sidereal one, the ayanamsa is subtracted. Several ayanamsas exist (Raman, Krishnamurti, Lahiri and others), but Lahiri or Chitrapaksha ayanamsa, named after N. C. Lahiri, was adopted for the Indian national calendar after the Calendar Reform Committee of the 1950s. It is the default in most Indian Panchangs and kundali software.
Makar Sankranti, celebrated with dahi-chura and til in Bihar, falls around 14-15 January. That is when the Sun enters sidereal Makar (Capricorn). In the tropical system, the Sun enters Capricorn at the winter solstice around 21-22 December. The three-week gap is the ayanamsa in action. Similarly, Satuan or Mesh Sankranti around mid-April marks the Sun's entry into sidereal Mesh, while tropical Aries begins around 21 March. Read more in our Makar Sankranti guide.
Classical texts describe the Moon as "chandrama manaso jatah" — the Moon is born of the mind. Vedic astrology treats the Moon as the significator of mind, emotions, mother and day-to-day experience. Since daily life is experienced through the mind, transits are judged from the Moon.
The Sun stays in one sign for about a month, so everyone born in that month shares a Sun sign. The Moon changes sign roughly every 2.25 days and nakshatra roughly every day, making the Moon sign far more specific to the individual.
The Sun is still important in Vedic astrology — it represents soul, father, authority and vitality — but it is not used as the main "sign" for predictions.

Each rashi spans 30 degrees and contains two and a quarter nakshatras. For example, Mesh contains Ashwini, Bharani and the first quarter of Krittika. See our 27 nakshatras guide for the full list.
These are tendencies of the mind only; the full chart can modify them considerably.
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| Vedic astrology "changed" my sign | It uses a different planet and zodiac; nothing changed |
| The sidereal zodiac is outdated | It tracks the actual star background; tropical tracks seasons. Both are consistent systems |
| My name letter gives my true rashi | Only if the name was chosen from the birth nakshatra |
| Sun sign horoscopes and rashifal should match | They use different methods and will usually differ |
Rashi is part of daily life in Bihar. Mithila Panchangs printed in Darbhanga guide festival dates, families in Gaya and Patna consult the Panchang for Sade Sati and griha pravesh, and Ashtakoot matching by rashi and nakshatra is still central to arranged marriages from Darbhanga to Gaya and Patna. Knowing your correct Moon sign is the first step to using any of these properly.
For a Vedic astrology reading or a full kundali analysis, bring your date of birth, exact time of birth and place of birth. Astrologer Praveen Kumar will confirm your rashi, nakshatra and lagna, explain how the Moon and lagna charts work together, and read your current dasha and transits from the correct reference point.

Western astrology usually uses your Sun sign in the tropical zodiac, while Vedic astrology uses your Moon sign in the sidereal zodiac. These are two different planets and two different reference systems. The sidereal zodiac is currently about 24 degrees behind the tropical one, so even your Sun sign often shifts back by one sign in a Vedic chart.
Often yes. The Moon stays in one sign for about two and a quarter days, so the date and place of birth are usually enough. If the Moon changed sign on your birth day, the birth time decides which rashi is correct. Your lagna, however, changes about every two hours and needs an accurate time.
Both matter. The lagna or ascendant describes the body, personality and the house framework of the whole chart, while the Moon sign describes the mind and emotions and is used for rashifal, Sade Sati and Vimshottari dasha. A good reading checks charts from both the lagna and the Moon. Neither should be read alone.
In the Indian tradition, newspaper and Panchang rashifal is based on the Moon sign, because transits are judged from the natal Moon. If you read a Vedic rashifal, use your Moon rashi. Sun sign horoscopes in English magazines follow the Western tropical method and will not match Vedic predictions.
Ayanamsa is the angular gap between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs, caused by the slow precession of the equinoxes. Lahiri or Chitrapaksha ayanamsa was adopted for the official Indian national calendar following the Calendar Reform Committee of the 1950s, and it is the most widely used standard among Indian astrologers today.
