Ask any Vedic astrologer which single factor matters most in a kundali, and the answer is almost always the same — the लग्न (lagna), or ascendant. Your lagna decides which house every sign falls in, which planets are friendly or difficult for you, and how your body, temperament and life direction are shaped. Sun-sign horoscopes in newspapers ignore it entirely; Vedic astrology begins with it.
This guide explains what the lagna is, how it is calculated, and what each of the 12 lagnas means — personality, lagna lord, yogakaraka planet, and the planets generally considered benefic or malefic. It ends with a summary table you can use with your own chart.
As the Earth rotates, all twelve zodiac signs rise one after another on the eastern horizon over roughly 24 hours. The sign — and the exact degree — rising in the east at the moment of your birth is your lagna. In the North Indian chart style used across Bihar, the lagna sits in the top-centre diamond, and the number written there tells you which sign it is (1 for Aries, 2 for Taurus, and so on).
The lagna becomes the 1st house (तनु भाव, Tanu Bhava), and the following signs fill the remaining houses in order. That is why the 12 houses of the kundali can only be read once the lagna is known.
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) treats the lagna as the foundation of the chart, and also describes the scheme of functional benefics and malefics for each lagna that astrologers still use. Phaladeepika and Saravali add detailed descriptions of lagna-wise temperament.
Three details are needed:
From these, the sidereal time and the rising degree are computed, then adjusted by the ayanamsha (usually Lahiri) to get the Vedic sidereal position.
On average a sign rises in about two hours, but signs of short ascension rise faster and signs of long ascension take longer, and the duration also depends on latitude. At Patna or Bhagalpur, a child born a few minutes apart near a sign boundary can have a different lagna — and therefore a different chart. When the time is uncertain, an astrologer uses birth time rectification, testing the chart against known life events.
Our article on moon sign vs sun sign covers the difference in detail.

The same planet can be your best friend or a source of trouble depending on the lagna. Saturn is a yogakaraka for a Libra native but rules the 6th and 7th houses for Leo. Recommending blue sapphire to both, just because "Saturn is running", would be a serious mistake. This is why gemstone advice must start from the lagna. See our gemstone guide for trial periods and the risks of wrong stones, and our gemstone recommendation service for a chart-based suggestion.
Lagna also shapes how a dasha plays out. The Vimshottari Mahadasha of a yogakaraka is usually productive, while the dasha of a functional malefic needs care — even if that planet is a natural benefic like Jupiter.
A weak lagna or lagna lord — debilitated, combust, or placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th — can show low confidence or health ups and downs. Traditional supports include:
For nine-planet rituals, read our Navagraha Shanti guide.
Families in Patna, Bhagalpur and Nalanda often have handwritten janma patris prepared by the family purohit. These usually state the lagna clearly in the top section. If your old patri and an app show different lagnas, the cause is usually a difference in recorded time, place or ayanamsha — worth checking before relying on either.
Bring your date, exact time and place of birth, and an old janma patri if you have one. In a kundali analysis, Astrologer Praveen Kumar confirms your lagna (rectifying the time if needed), explains your lagna lord, yogakaraka and functional benefics, and shows how they connect to your career, marriage, health and current dasha. Lagna is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth and becomes the 1st house of the kundali. Rashi is the sign the Moon occupies at birth. Lagna describes the body, temperament and life direction; rashi describes the mind and emotions. Both are used, but lagna decides which planets are benefic or malefic for you.
As accurate as possible. The rising sign changes roughly every two hours on average, and some signs rise faster than others at Bihar's latitude. A birth near the boundary between two signs can change lagna with a difference of a few minutes. Hospital records are best; if unsure, an astrologer can perform birth time rectification using past life events.
A yogakaraka is a single planet that rules both a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) and a trikona (5th or 9th house) for a particular lagna, making it especially auspicious. Saturn is yogakaraka for Taurus and Libra, Mars for Cancer and Leo, and Venus for Capricorn and Aquarius. Its dasha often brings notable progress.
The lagna lord's gemstone is often considered among the safer choices because the lagna lord is generally treated as favourable. However, if the lagna lord also rules a difficult house, or is badly placed, a stone can still cause problems. Wear any gemstone only after full chart analysis, ideally after a short trial period.
Yes. The lagna sets the framework, but the placement of planets, their strength, aspects, nakshatras, divisional charts and the running dasha differ for each person. Two Leo lagna people may share confidence and pride, yet one may rise through government service and another through business, depending on the rest of the chart.
