Gandmool nakshatra (गंडमूल नक्षत्र, Gandmool or Moola Nakshatra Dosh) is one of the first things a family priest checks when a baby is born in Bihar. If the Moon at birth is in one of six specific nakshatras — Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Mool and Revati — the child is said to be born in gandmool, and a Gandmool Shanti Puja is traditionally done on the 27th day. This guide explains why these six nakshatras are special, what the charans indicate, how the puja is done, the samagri needed, Mithila and Bhojpur customs, and the common myths.
Direct answer: Gandmool nakshatras are the six nakshatras that sit at the junction where a water sign ends and a fire sign begins. A child whose birth Moon falls in them is traditionally given a shanti puja on the 27th day after birth, when the Moon returns to the same nakshatra. The dosha is a reason for a ritual of peace, not a reason for fear.
| Nakshatra | Rashi | Nakshatra lord | Deity | Junction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ashwini (अश्विनी) | Aries | Ketu | Ashwini Kumars | Start of Aries after Pisces |
| Ashlesha (आश्लेषा) | Cancer | Mercury | Sarpa (Nagas) | End of Cancer before Leo |
| Magha (मघा) | Leo | Ketu | Pitris (ancestors) | Start of Leo after Cancer |
| Jyeshtha (ज्येष्ठा) | Scorpio | Mercury | Indra | End of Scorpio before Sagittarius |
| Mool (मूल) | Sagittarius | Ketu | Nirriti | Start of Sagittarius after Scorpio |
| Revati (रेवती) | Pisces | Mercury | Pushan | End of Pisces before Aries |
The zodiac has 12 signs and 27 nakshatras. At three points, the end of a sign and the end of a nakshatra coincide exactly, and those points are where a water sign (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) meets a fire sign (Leo, Sagittarius, Aries):
Such a junction is called gandanta (गंडांत) — "the knot at the end". The word gand means knot, and mool means root. The nakshatras on either side of each knot are the gandmool nakshatras. Notice the pattern: the nakshatras ending a water sign are ruled by Mercury, and the nakshatras starting a fire sign are ruled by Ketu. Classical Muhurta and Jataka texts treat these transition zones as sensitive, much like the twilight between day and night.
The most sensitive part is the exact joint — the last portion of Revati, Ashlesha and Jyeshtha and the first portion of Ashwini, Magha and Mool. A birth very close to the Jyeshtha-Mool junction is sometimes called Abhukta Mool in traditional texts and is given special attention.

Each nakshatra has four charans (quarters). Folk and Muhurta traditions assign a different "area of concern" to each charan. Versions differ between texts and regions, so treat the list below as the commonly cited tradition, not a fixed verdict:
Two cautions matter more than the list:
The classical and most widely followed rule is:
The procedure varies by family tradition, but the core sequence followed by most priests in Bihar is:
Your priest will give the final list, as it changes slightly with nakshatra and family tradition.
Mithila (Darbhanga, Madhubani) has a deep tradition of Panchang-based rituals. Families here typically consult the family pandit within days of birth, and the shanti is planned carefully with the Mithila Panchang. In many households the father waits to see the child's face until the shanti, seeing the reflection in oil first.
Bhojpur (Buxar, Ara) follows a similar Sattaisa custom. Many families combine the gandmool shanti with other early childhood rituals, and some schedule it around a visit to the Ganga ghat at Buxar.
Across Bihar, the gandmool shanti often sets the stage for later samskaras such as namkaran and mundan. The baby's name is often chosen from the syllable linked to the birth nakshatra charan — see our baby name and namkaran numerology guide.

Check the Moon's nakshatra at the time of birth in the baby's kundali. If it is Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Mool or Revati, the child is born in a gandmool nakshatra. The hospital birth time must be accurate, because the Moon can move from one nakshatra to another within the same day.
The preferred time is the 27th day after birth, when the Moon returns to the birth nakshatra. If that day is missed because of illness or travel, the shanti can be done on any later day when the Moon is again in the same nakshatra, which happens roughly every 27 days. Many families also do it on or near the first birthday.
Tradition says certain charans may bring strain to a family member, but the effect depends heavily on the full birth chart, the strength of the Moon and the lagna, and benefic aspects. Many children born in these nakshatras grow up healthy and successful. The shanti puja is a traditional practice for peace of mind, not a cure for a disease.
Some families in Mithila, Bhojpur and eastern Uttar Pradesh follow a custom in which the father avoids looking at the child's face until the shanti, often seeing the reflection in oil first. This is a regional custom, not a strict classical rule, and many priests today advise that the custom should never get in the way of the baby's care.
If the shanti was never performed in childhood, many families choose to do it later, often on a day when the Moon transits the birth nakshatra. For adults, the astrologer usually reviews the whole chart first, because life events depend far more on dasha and planetary strength than on the birth nakshatra alone.
