Choosing a name is one of the first loving decisions parents make. In Bihar, it is also a family event — grandmothers suggest names of deities, the family purohit checks the Panchang, and aunts debate between a traditional name and a modern one. Namkaran sanskar (नामकरण संस्कार) is one of the sixteen samskaras of Hindu life, and Vedic tradition gives clear guidance on when to hold it and how to select the name's first syllable from the baby's nakshatra.
This guide explains the traditional timing of Namkaran, how the Avakahada chakra gives the first letter, how name numerology works, Bihar's naming customs, and what to do if your baby is born in a Gandmool nakshatra.
Note: Astrology and naming customs complement, but never replace, the care and advice of your paediatrician. Always follow your doctor's guidance on the health of mother and baby.
The Grihya Sutras (such as the Paraskara Grihya Sutra followed widely in North India) place Namkaran after the ten-day period of birth impurity (सूतक, sutak). In practice:
The exact muhurat depends on the local Panchang for your town and on the baby's chart, so it is best fixed by a family purohit or astrologer.
Naming in Bihar sits inside a wider set of post-birth rituals:
The Moon's nakshatra at birth is called the janma nakshatra. Each of the 27 nakshatras is divided into four padas (quarters), and each pada has a syllable. This table is known as the अवकहडा चक्र (Avakahada chakra). The baby's name should begin with the syllable of its janma nakshatra pada.
| Nakshatra | Pada 1 | Pada 2 | Pada 3 | Pada 4 |

To understand the qualities of each birth star, read our guide to the 27 nakshatras. The Moon's sign (rashi) is also decided by the nakshatra pada — our article on moon sign vs sun sign explains why Vedic astrology gives the Moon such weight.
While the nakshatra syllable governs the ritual name, numerology (अंक शास्त्र, Ank Shastra) is often applied to the name written on the birth certificate and school records. In the Chaldean system, commonly used in India, letters carry these values:
| Number | Letters | Planet |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | A, I, J, Q, Y | Sun |
| 2 | B, K, R | Moon |
| 3 | C, G, L, S | Jupiter |
| 4 | D, M, T | Rahu |
| 5 | E, H, N, X | Mercury |
| 6 | U, V, W | Venus |
| 7 | O, Z | Ketu |
| 8 | F, P | Saturn |
The Chaldean system does not assign 9 to any letter, as 9 is treated as sacred.
AARAV = A(1) + A(1) + R(2) + A(1) + V(6) = 11 → 1 + 1 = 2 (Moon).
AARRAV = 1 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 6 = 13 → 1 + 3 = 4 (Rahu).
A single doubled letter changes the vibration from Moon to Rahu, which is why spelling matters in numerology.
The baby's birth number (मूलांक, Moolank) is the day of birth reduced to one digit — a child born on the 23rd has Moolank 5 (2 + 3). The life path number (भाग्यांक, Bhagyank) is the full date reduced. As a general guide:

Six nakshatras lie at the junction (गण्डान्त, gandanta) where a water sign ends and a fire sign begins. Babies born with the Moon in these are said to be born in गण्डमूल (Gandmool):
| Nakshatra | Junction | Ruling planet |
|---|---|---|
| Ashwini | Pisces → Aries | Ketu |
| Ashlesha | Cancer → Leo | Mercury |
| Magha | Cancer → Leo | Ketu |
| Jyeshtha | Scorpio → Sagittarius | Mercury |
| Mula | Scorpio → Sagittarius | Ketu |
| Revati | Pisces → Aries | Mercury |
Tradition, including verses cited in Muhurta texts, holds that birth in certain padas of these nakshatras can bring difficulties for the child or relatives, and prescribes a मूल शान्ति (Mool Shanti) puja.
Gandmool is not a curse. Many accomplished people are born in these nakshatras. The shanti is a protective, calming ritual. For the nine-planet portion of this puja, see our Navagraha Shanti guide.

Families from Darbhanga and Madhubani often keep strong Mithila customs such as Barahi. In Gaya and Nalanda, the Chhathi puja is the main gathering where relatives first hear the baby's name. Wherever you live, the principle is the same — a name that honours the child's birth star and supports their life.
Astrologer Praveen Kumar prepares the baby's kundali through a kundali analysis, identifies the janma nakshatra and pada, checks for Gandmool, suggests a Namkaran muhurat, and gives a shortlist of names with matching syllable and numerology. If shanti is needed, the procedure and dates are explained clearly.

The Grihya Sutras place Namkaran after the ten-day birth impurity period, so it is most commonly done on the 11th or 12th day after birth. If that day is inauspicious per the Panchang, families choose a later day with a good tithi, nakshatra and weekday. Many Bihar families combine naming with the Chhathi or Barahi celebration.
Note the exact time and place of birth, then find the Moon's nakshatra and its pada (quarter) in the baby's kundali. Each of the 27 nakshatras has four padas, and each pada is linked to one syllable in the Avakahada chakra. For example, Rohini pada 1 gives O, so names like Om or Omkar fit.
Gandmool refers to six nakshatras at the junction of water and fire signs: Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Mula and Revati. Tradition recommends a Mool Shanti puja for babies born in these, usually on the 27th day when the Moon returns to the same nakshatra. It is a protective ritual, not a sign of misfortune.
In Vedic tradition, the nakshatra syllable is primary for the ritual or rashi name, used in puja, horoscope matching and sankalp. Numerology is often applied to the everyday or official name written on certificates. Many families keep a nakshatra-based rashi name and choose a call name whose number suits the baby's birth number.
Yes. A small spelling change, such as adding or doubling a letter, can shift the name number without changing the sound. It is easiest to finalise before school admission and birth certificate entries. Any change should be checked against the baby's birth date and full chart, not just the name total.
