A mulank and bhagyank calculator is the first thing most people search for when they get curious about numerology (अंक ज्योतिष, Ank Jyotish). The good news is that you do not need an app — both numbers can be worked out by hand from your date of birth in under a minute. This guide shows how to calculate mulank (मूलांक, root number) and bhagyank (भाग्यांक, destiny number), gives worked examples, explains the traits of numbers 1 to 9 and their ruling planets, and lists lucky days, colours and number compatibility.
Direct answer: Mulank = your birth date (day only) reduced to a single digit. Bhagyank = the full date of birth (day + month + year) added digit by digit and reduced to a single digit. For 23-08-1996, the mulank is 5 and the bhagyank is 2.
| Number | Planet | Lucky day | Lucky colours | Friendly numbers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sun (सूर्य) | Sunday | Golden, orange | 1, 2, 3, 9 |
| 2 | Moon (चंद्र) | Monday | White, cream, silver | 1, 2, 7 |
| 3 | Jupiter (गुरु) | Thursday | Yellow | 1, 3, 9 |
| 4 | Rahu (राहु) | Saturday, Sunday | Grey, blue | 1, 5, 6 |
| 5 | Mercury (बुध) | Wednesday | Green | 1, 5, 6 |
| 6 | Venus (शुक्र) | Friday | White, light blue, pink | 5, 6, 9 |
| 7 | Ketu (केतु) | Monday | Light green, white | 1, 2, 7 |
| 8 | Saturn (शनि) | Saturday | Dark blue, black | 5, 6, 8 |
| 9 | Mars (मंगल) | Tuesday | Red | 1, 3, 6, 9 |
Different numerology schools vary slightly on friendly numbers and colours. The table follows the planet-friendship approach commonly used in Indian numerology. Treat it as a starting point, not a rule.
Mulank uses only the day of the month on which you were born.
So people born on the 1st, 10th, 19th and 28th all share mulank 1; people born on the 8th, 17th and 26th share mulank 8.
Bhagyank uses the complete date of birth — day, month and four-digit year.
This person has Mercury's quick, communicative nature (5) but a Moon-driven destiny (2) — life tends to bring roles involving people, care and partnership.
A reflective, inward nature (7) with a destiny that leans towards learning, teaching or guidance (3).
A note on master numbers: some Western systems stop at 11, 22 or 33. Indian numerology normally reduces these to single digits, which is the method used here.

People in Gaya, Bhagalpur and Muzaffarpur often ask how to apply these numbers in daily life. Traditional practical uses:
These are supportive habits, not guarantees. For big decisions such as muhurat for marriage or griha pravesh, the Panchang and your kundali carry far more weight than numerology alone.
Numerology compatibility looks at how the ruling planets of two people relate:
Numerology compatibility is a light first check. For marriage in Bihar, families rely on guna milan and ashtakoot matching and full marriage compatibility analysis, which examine the 7th house, Mangal Dosha and Nadi in depth.
Your name number (नामांक, Naamank) is the third pillar. It is calculated from the letters of your name using the Chaldean system and should ideally be friendly to both mulank and bhagyank. Choosing a name for a newborn is covered in our baby name and namkaran numerology guide, and choosing a firm or shop name is covered in numerology for business in Bihar. This post deliberately stays with the personal numbers from date of birth.

Mulank is the root number from your day of birth alone and describes your basic nature, habits and how others see you. Bhagyank is the destiny number from the full date of birth — day, month and year — and describes the direction of your life and the opportunities fate brings. Mulank shows who you are; bhagyank shows where life tends to take you.
Add the two digits of the birth date and keep adding until you reach a single digit. For the 29th, 2 plus 9 equals 11, and 1 plus 1 equals 2, so the mulank is 2, ruled by the Moon. The month and year are not used for mulank; they are added only when you calculate the bhagyank.
Indian numerology traditionally uses the calendar date of birth, so a birth at 1 AM counts as the new date. Vedic astrology, however, counts the day from sunrise, so the weekday in your kundali may differ. If your birth was between midnight and sunrise, mention this during consultation so both systems can be read correctly.
No. Both come from the date of birth and are fixed for life. What people adjust is the name number — the spelling of a name or business name — so that it harmonises with the mulank and bhagyank. Such changes should be made only after proper calculation, not by randomly adding letters.
They are not unlucky, but they are associated with Rahu and Saturn, so life tends to involve delays, hard work and sudden changes before stable success. Many disciplined and successful people carry these numbers. The full picture also depends on the bhagyank, the name number and the planets in the birth chart.
