Debt — ऋण (rin) or कर्ज (karz) — is one of the most stressful situations a family can face. In Bihar, it often arrives through a daughter's wedding, a medical emergency, a failed crop season, a business loan in Bhagalpur's silk trade, or a home loan taken in Patna's growing suburbs. Many people who come for a consultation say the same thing: "I earn, but the money never stays, and the loan never finishes."
Vedic astrology has a long tradition of reading debt in the birth chart and suggesting karz mukti upay (remedies for freedom from debt). This guide explains which houses and planets show debt, why Mars is called the remover of debt, how to recite the Rin Mochan Mangal Stotra, which days tradition favours for repaying loans, and what practical steps should go alongside any remedy.
Note: Astrology can complement, but never replace, a sound repayment plan and advice from a qualified financial adviser, chartered accountant or your bank.
No single factor "causes" debt. An astrologer looks at a group of houses, their lords, the planets placed in them, and the current dasha. If you are new to houses, read our guide to the 12 houses of the kundali first.
Classical texts such as Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) list debt, disease and enemies among the significations of the 6th house (षष्ठ भाव). This is the core house for loans. A strong 6th house, or a well-placed 6th lord, often shows a person who can take loans and repay them comfortably — many successful business owners have an active 6th house. A weak or heavily afflicted 6th house, or a 6th lord sitting in the 2nd or 11th, can show money flowing out through borrowing.
The 8th house governs other people's money, inheritance, insurance, and sudden events. Affliction here can show unexpected liabilities — a guarantee given for a relative, a sudden hospital bill, or a loan that grows through interest and penalties.
The 12th house (व्यय भाव) is the house of expense. When the 2nd or 11th lord sits in the 12th, or the 12th lord is very strong and connected to the wealth houses, spending tends to outrun income.
The 2nd house (धन भाव) shows accumulated wealth and family resources; the 11th house (लाभ भाव) shows income and gains. Debt becomes a problem when these are weak while the 6th, 8th and 12th are active. When the 2nd and 11th are strong, even large loans are usually manageable.
The Vimshottari Mahadasha system is central here: the same chart can feel comfortable in one dasha and strained in the next.
In the Rin Mochan Mangal Stotra, Mars (मंगल, Mangal) is addressed as ऋणहर्ता (Rin-harta) — "the one who takes away debt" — and धनप्रद (Dhanaprada) — "the giver of wealth". Mars represents courage, decisive action, land and property, and the energy to fight obstacles. Tradition holds that a strong, well-supported Mars gives the drive to clear liabilities, while an afflicted Mars can bring hasty decisions, disputes and borrowing for land or vehicles.
This is why most traditional karz mukti remedies are performed on Tuesday (मंगलवार, Mangalvar) and are directed to Mangal Dev or to Lord Hanuman, who is worshipped in North India as the deity who pacifies Mars.
The ऋणमोचन मंगल स्तोत्र (Rin Mochan Mangal Stotra) is traditionally attributed to the Skanda Purana. It contains the 21 names of Mars and a prayer for freedom from debt. Its opening verse is:
मङ्गलो भूमिपुत्रश्च ऋणहर्ता धनप्रदः। स्थिरासनो महाकायः सर्वकर्मविरोधकः॥
Mangalo bhumiputrashcha rinaharta dhanapradah, Sthirasano mahakayah sarvakarma-virodhakah.
Meaning: "Mangal, son of the Earth, remover of debt, giver of wealth, firmly seated, of mighty form, who stands against obstacles in all work."
Alongside the stotra, many families chant the Mars beej mantra:
ॐ क्रां क्रीं क्रौं सः भौमाय नमः॥ Om Kraam Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah.
Meaning: "Salutations to Bhauma, the son of the Earth." One mala (108 times) on Tuesdays is a simple practice. For full Mars and other planetary rituals, see our guide to Navagraha Shanti Puja.
These are traditional practices followed in many homes across Bihar. Choose a few that suit you rather than doing everything at once.
Gemstones such as red coral (मूंगा, Moonga) are sometimes suggested for a weak Mars. Wear one only after a full chart analysis — coral can aggravate temper and conflict when Mars is a functional malefic for your lagna. Our gemstone guide explains trial periods and the risks of a wrong stone.
Muhurta tradition, reflected in texts such as Muhurta Chintamani and in local Panchang practice, gives guidance on financial transactions. The widely followed popular rules are:
| Action | Traditionally favoured | Traditionally avoided |
|---|---|---|
| Repaying a loan or instalment | Tuesday (Mangalvar) | — |
| Taking a fresh loan | Days with a good tithi and nakshatra per Panchang | Tuesday, Sankranti days, Vriddhi yoga |
| Lending money to others | Days and nakshatras favoured in the local Panchang | Wednesday is avoided by many families as a folk custom |
| Signing a business loan | Shubh muhurat matched to your chart | Rahu Kaal, Bhadra |
The logic is simple: Mars "takes away" debt, so paying on Tuesday is believed to help clear it, while borrowing on Tuesday is believed to make the debt stick. These are traditions, not contractual rules — never delay an EMI or due date just to wait for Tuesday. A practical approach many families use is to pay a small extra amount (even a token sum) towards the principal on Tuesdays, in addition to scheduled payments.
For those who want structure, this is a commonly used plan:
Astrology looks at timing and tendency; your actions decide the result. Alongside any remedy:
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| One puja will wipe out a loan | Remedies are spiritual support; repayment still needs income and planning |
| A 6th house planet always means debt | A strong 6th house often shows ability to borrow and repay well |
| Everyone with debt should wear red coral | Coral can harm when Mars is a functional malefic for your lagna |
| Debt is fate and nothing can be done | Charts show tendencies and timing; disciplined effort changes outcomes |
Debt patterns in Bihar often follow life events — wedding expenses in Mithila and Bhojpur families, agricultural loans in Begusarai and Samastipur, small business borrowing in Muzaffarpur, and education loans for students preparing in Patna. Many families visit Mahavir Mandir in Patna, Hanuman temples in Gaya, or local Bajrangbali sthans on Tuesdays with a specific prayer for karz mukti. Combined with the right timing for repayment and new ventures, these practices give many people steadiness through a hard phase.
If your debt is tied to a business, a reading for business astrology can help identify favourable periods for expansion and periods to consolidate. Clients from Begusarai, Muzaffarpur and Patna often ask for this combined view.

The 6th house is the primary house of debt (rin), along with disease and enemies. The 8th house shows sudden liabilities and other people's money, the 12th shows expenses and losses, and the 2nd and 11th show savings and income. An astrologer reads all five together, plus their lords and the running dasha, before judging a debt pattern.
Popular tradition says Tuesday (Mangalvar) is the best day to repay a loan or pay an instalment, because Mars is called Rin-harta, the remover of debt. The same tradition advises against taking a fresh loan on Tuesday. Many families also avoid borrowing on Sankranti days. In practice, never delay a due payment just to wait for a particular weekday.
The common practice is to recite the Rin Mochan Mangal Stotra once or three times every Tuesday, ideally in the morning after bathing, facing south or east, with a red flower and a ghee lamp before Lord Hanuman or Mangal Dev. Some people recite it daily for 21 or 43 days. Regularity and sincerity matter more than a large count.
No. Astrological remedies are traditional spiritual practices that many people find bring calm, discipline and better timing. They do not replace a budget, restructuring a loan, or advice from a qualified financial adviser or bank. The best results come from combining a sound repayment plan with remedies chosen after reading your own birth chart.
Mars rules courage, land, siblings and the drive to act, and tradition calls it Rin-harta, the one who removes debt. An afflicted or debilitated Mars, especially linked to the 6th, 8th or 12th house, is often seen in charts with repeated borrowing or disputes over property loans. But debt is never judged from one planet alone; the full chart and dasha must be studied.
