Shyama Mai Mandir in Darbhanga — श्यामा माई मंदिर, दरभंगा — is one of the most powerful centres of Shakti upasana (शक्ति उपासना) in Mithila. Built in the Darbhanga Raj complex over the funeral pyre of Maharaja Rameshwar Singh, it enshrines Maa Kali as Shyama Mai, the dark Mother. Devotees from Darbhanga, Madhubani and Samastipur come here in Navratri and on Kali Puja night, and many arrive with a quiet astrological purpose: relief from a hard Rahu, Ketu or Shani period.
Quick answer: Shyama Mai Mandir is a Kali temple in Darbhanga's Raj complex, built over Maharaja Rameshwar Singh's cremation site, and a living centre of Mithila's Shakta tradition. In Jyotish, Devi worship — Kali, Durga and the Navarna mantra — is a classic upay for Rahu, Ketu and Saturn afflictions. It is best used as a steady devotional practice chosen from your chart.

Maharaja Rameshwar Singh of the Darbhanga Raj was known as a devoted Shakta and a patron of Sanskrit learning. After his death he was cremated within the Raj grounds, and the temple of Shyama Mai was raised over that very pyre. The idea of a shrine on a cremation site follows a deep Shakta conviction: the Mother is Kali, she who dances in the shmashana, and for her devotee death is not something to fear but a return to her lap.
The Raj complex holds the cremation sites of several members of the royal family, and smaller shrines stand over some of them, giving the whole area a distinctive atmosphere of devotion. Remarkably, Shyama Mai is also known as a place where couples come to be married — a sign that, in local faith, the Mother's presence makes even a shmashana auspicious. We avoid quoting exact construction dates here; the temple's living tradition matters more than a year on a plaque.
Mithila has one of India's strongest Shakta traditions. Most Maithil Brahmin families keep a kuldevi or gosauni (गोसाउनि) in the home shrine, and Devi worship runs through every life event — from marriage songs to Kojagara and Madhushravani.
Two forms of the Mother hold a special place in the region:
Other well-known Devi sthans in the region include Uchchaith Bhagwati in Madhubani district, linked in legend with the poet Kalidas.
Mithila is also known for its classical tantric scholarship, and many old Maithil families follow Shakta tantric forms of worship handed down within the lineage. Tantra here is a disciplined spiritual path with initiation (diksha), a guru, strict purity and an ethical frame — not the "black magic" of popular imagination. Anything beyond simple devotion — yantra sadhana, night anushthan, bali or advanced mantras — should only be undertaken under a qualified guru in the family's own tradition. Our remedies below are devotional and safe for anyone.
For how Mithila scholars shaped the region's calendar and Jyotish, see our post on the Mithila Panchang and Darbhanga's astrology tradition.
Sharadiya Navratri in Ashwin is the high point of the year at Shyama Mai. Devotees keep the nine-day fast, recite the Durga Saptashati, and visit on Ashtami and Navami in large numbers. Kali Puja on Kartik Amavasya (Diwali night) is the other great night, and Chaitra Navratri draws a steadier crowd.
For a planet-specific Navratri plan — which day and form of the Devi suits which graha — read our Navratri and Durga Puja astrology guide.
Classical and regional Jyotish connect each graha with a deity. Devi worship is widely used for the harsher, "shadowy" influences.
| Graha | Typical signs when afflicted | Devi upay commonly advised |
|---|---|---|
| Rahu | Confusion, fear, addiction tendencies, sudden events | Durga Saptashati path, Navarna mantra, Durga worship on Saturdays |
| Ketu | Detachment, sudden losses, unexplained health worry | Chamunda or Kali worship, Ganesh puja first, Navarna mantra |
| Saturn (Sade Sati, Dhaiya) | Delays, heaviness, workload, loneliness | Kali naam japa on Saturdays, mustard-oil diya, service to the poor |
| Moon with Rahu or Saturn | Anxiety, poor sleep, low mood | Durga Saptashati Kavach, white flowers to the Devi on Mondays |
| Kalsarp Yoga | Recurring obstacles | Shiva and Naga puja, plus Devi worship in Navratri |
Saturn is dark, slow and associated with endings and discipline; Kali is the dark Mother who presides over time (Kala). Mithila devotees therefore turn to Kali when Shani's weight feels unbearable, often pairing it with Hanuman worship. For the full Saturn picture, see Shani Sade Sati effects and remedies.
In many Jyotish remedy traditions, Durga is the deity prescribed for Rahu — her lion-borne form subdues confusion and illusion. Rahu and Ketu are explained house by house in our Rahu-Ketu effects and remedies guide.
This is a safe devotional practice for anyone, at home or after a visit to Shyama Mai.
Kali naam mantra:
ॐ क्रीं कालिकायै नमः — Om Kreem Kalikayai Namah — "Salutations to Mother Kali."
Navarna mantra — the central mantra of the Durga Saptashati:
ॐ ऐं ह्रीं क्लीं चामुण्डायै विच्चे — Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundayai Vichche — "Salutations to Chamunda, who embodies knowledge, power and love."
Durga naam mantra:
ॐ दुं दुर्गायै नमः — Om Dum Durgayai Namah — "Salutations to Durga."
| Do | Don't |
|---|---|
| Keep the practice regular, even if short | Attempt tantric sadhana without a guru |
| Follow your family's kuldevi customs | Use Devi worship to wish harm on anyone |
| Choose mantra and days from your chart | Mix many mantras at once out of anxiety |
| Respect the temple's rules and the cremation-ground setting | Believe anyone who promises guaranteed results for money |

Shyama Mai Mandir stands in the Darbhanga Raj complex over the cremation site of Maharaja Rameshwar Singh, with Maa Kali enshrined as Shyama Mai. A temple built on a funeral pyre is rare, and it reflects the Shakta belief that the Mother presides over both life and death. It is one of the most visited Devi temples in Mithila.
In Jyotish tradition Durga is linked with Rahu and Ganesh or Chamunda with Ketu, while Kali is invoked for fear, sudden crises and Saturn-related heaviness. Durga Saptashati path, the Navarna mantra and Kali puja are common upay in Mithila. The choice of form and mantra should follow your chart and family tradition.
Simple devotional worship of Maa Kali with a diya, flowers, the name japa Om Kreem Kalikayai Namah and Durga Saptashati reading is open to everyone. Tantric sadhanas, special yantras and night-time anushthans require proper initiation from a qualified guru and should not be attempted from books or videos.
Sharadiya Navratri in Ashwin, Diwali night for Kali Puja, and Tuesdays and Saturdays are the most popular times. Navratri brings the largest crowds and a festive atmosphere. For a quiet darshan and personal sankalpa, an ordinary weekday morning works best. Exact festival dates each year follow the Mithila Panchang.
Mithila tradition holds that Maa Kali, whose dark form mirrors Saturn, removes fear and heaviness, so Kali and Durga worship are often added to Sade Sati remedies alongside Hanuman and Shiva puja. These practices support patience and resilience. They do not cancel karma, and the timing and intensity of Sade Sati should first be checked in the chart.
