Patna temples for graha shanti have been part of family life in the city for generations. When a kundli shows a troubled Mars, Saturn, Rahu or Moon, the first remedy many Patna families think of is not an expensive puja but a regular visit to a temple linked with the right deity — Hanuman at Mahavir Mandir, the Goddess at Badi and Chhoti Patan Devi, or Shitala Mata near Agam Kuan. This guide explains which temple in Patna suits which planet, the traditional day to go, what to offer, and how to combine a temple visit with a proper chart reading.
Quick answer: For Mars and Saturn, Patna families go to Mahavir Mandir on Tuesday or Saturday. For Venus, Rahu and general Devi kripa, they visit Badi or Chhoti Patan Devi, especially on Friday and during Navratri. For Moon and mental peace, Monday Shiva worship and Ganga snan at the Patna ghats is the common upay.
Graha shanti (ग्रह शांति, pacifying the planets) rests on a simple principle found across Jyotish texts: each planet is linked with a deity, a weekday, colours, grains and a mantra. The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra describes remedies for difficult planetary periods through worship of the presiding deity, japa, daan and homa. Folk practice in Bihar turned this into a practical habit — visit the temple of the right deity on the right weekday, offer the right items, and repeat it with patience.
The commonly followed pairings are:
For a full planet-by-planet procedure with mantras, see our Navagraha shanti puja guide.
| Temple in Patna | Deity | Graha traditionally linked | Best day | Common offerings |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mahavir Mandir, near Patna Junction | Hanuman | Mangal, Shani, Ketu | Tuesday, Saturday | Red flowers, sindoor, laddu, Hanuman Chalisa |
| Badi Patan Devi, Patna City | Devi (Shakti Peeth tradition) | Shukra, Rahu, Chandra | Friday, Navratri | Chunari, red flowers, coconut, shringar items |
| Chhoti Patan Devi, Patna City | Devi | Shukra, Rahu | Friday, Navratri | Chunari, sweets, diya |
| Shitala Mata Mandir, Agam Kuan area | Shitala Mata | Health-related, Chandra | Shitala Ashtami, Monday or Friday | Water, flowers, cooling prasad |
| Kali Mandir, Darbhanga House | Ma Kali | Rahu, Shani | Saturday, Amavasya | Hibiscus, mustard oil diya, black til |
| Ganga ghats of Patna | Ganga and Shiva | Chandra, Surya | Monday, Purnima, Sunday sunrise | Ganga snan, jal, arghya, white daan |
These are traditional associations followed by devotees, not rules fixed in one scripture. The right temple for you depends on which planet in your kundli actually needs support.
Mahavir Mandir (महावीर मंदिर) stands close to Patna Junction railway station and is one of the most visited Hanuman temples in Bihar. Its laddu prasad, known as naivedyam, is famous across the state.
Hanuman is the classical remedy deity for Mars — he is strong, disciplined and celibate, qualities that channel Mars energy constructively. Tradition also holds that Shani Dev does not trouble devotees of Hanuman, which is why Saturday crowds at Mahavir Mandir are as large as Tuesday crowds. People going through Shani Sade Sati, Dhaiya, or a difficult Saturn dasha make this a weekly routine.
Repeat for at least 11 or 21 consecutive weeks. For marriage-related Mars issues, read Mangal dosha and marriage in Bihar before deciding on bigger pujas.
Badi Patan Devi (बड़ी पटन देवी) in Patna City is revered as one of the Shakti Peethas, where, according to tradition, a part of Goddess Sati fell. Local tradition also connects the name of the city itself with Patan Devi, the guardian goddess of Patna. Chhoti Patan Devi (छोटी पटन देवी), also in the old city, is equally important to local families.
On Fridays, offer a red chunari, red flowers, coconut and shringar items. During Chaitra and Sharadiya Navratri, many Patna families read Durga Saptashati or at least the Argala and Kilak stotra daily. The Rahu mantra ॐ रां राहवे नमः (Om Raam Rahave Namah — salutations to Rahu) is chanted 108 times on Saturdays alongside Durga worship. See our Navratri and Durga Puja astrology guide for tithi-wise worship.
Agam Kuan (अगम कुआं) is an ancient well in the Gulzarbagh area of Patna, protected as a heritage site and linked in legend with the Mauryan period. Beside it stands the Shitala Mata Mandir, one of the most visited Shitala temples in the city.
Shitala Mata is not tied to one graha. She is worshipped for protection from fever-type illnesses, heat-related diseases and for the health of children. Many families observe Shitala Ashtami (Basoda) on Chaitra Krishna Ashtami, after Holi, offering food cooked the previous day. In chart terms, families often come here when the Moon or the 6th house is under stress and a child's health is a worry. Astrology complements, never replaces, a doctor's treatment — always follow medical advice first.
On the Ganga bank, within the Darbhanga House campus on Ashok Rajpath, is a well-known Kali Mandir. Kali worship is traditionally followed for Rahu and Saturn, and for removing fear and unseen obstacles. Saturday and Amavasya are the preferred days. Offer red hibiscus, a mustard oil diya and black til, and chant ॐ क्रीं कालिकायै नमः (Om Kreem Kalikayai Namah — salutations to Kalika) 108 times.
The Ganga flows along the north of Patna, and its ghats are a living remedy space. Monday or Purnima snan and white daan (rice, milk, curd, white cloth) support a weak Moon. Sunday sunrise arghya with water, red flowers and a little jaggery supports a weak Sun, and Chhath at the Patna ghats is the region's great Surya upasana — see our Chhath puja astrology guide. For a dedicated Surya temple remedy, many families also travel to Deo — read about Dev Surya Mandir in Aurangabad.

Families in Patna traditionally turn to Hanuman worship for Saturn, and Mahavir Mandir near Patna Junction is the best-known Hanuman temple in the city. Saturday visits with Hanuman Chalisa, a mustard oil lamp and black til daan are the common practice. Kali worship on Saturday is also followed by many households for Shani and Rahu.
Tuesday is the traditional day for Mars, and Hanuman is worshipped for Mangal dosh, so Tuesday is the usual choice. Devotees offer red flowers, sindoor and laddu prasad, and recite Hanuman Chalisa or Sundarkand. Saturday is the second busy day because Hanuman worship is also linked with relief from Saturn's difficult periods.
Badi Patan Devi in Patna City is revered in local tradition as one of the Shakti Peethas, where a part of Goddess Sati is believed to have fallen. Chhoti Patan Devi is also an old and important Devi temple in the same area. Both draw large crowds during Chaitra and Sharadiya Navratri.
A temple visit is a traditional remedy that supports devotion, discipline and a calmer mind, but it works best alongside a correct reading of the kundli. The planet, house and running dasha decide which remedy suits you. A chart check first ensures you are not worshipping for the wrong planet or ignoring a simpler upay.
Devotees traditionally offer water, flowers, sweets and cooling food items, and many families observe Shitala Ashtami, also called Basoda, after Holi with stale or cooked-the-previous-day food as prasad. The temple is visited mainly for the health of children and protection from fever-type illnesses, alongside proper medical care.
