Baba Garibnath Muzaffarpur — बाबा गरीबनाथ धाम, मुजफ्फरपुर — is the spiritual heart of Tirhut during Shravan (सावन). Every Monday of the holy month, the lanes around the temple in Muzaffarpur city fill with saffron-clad kanwariyas who have carried Ganga water on foot from Pahleja Ghat near Sonepur to pour on the Shivling. For many families in Muzaffarpur, Vaishali and Sitamarhi, a Shravan jalabhishek at Garibnath is not just a pilgrimage but a yearly upay for a restless Moon, a heavy Saturn period, or a troubling Rahu dasha.
Quick answer: Shravan Shiv puja at Baba Garibnath Muzaffarpur means offering Ganga jal — traditionally collected at Pahleja Ghat — on the Shivling, especially on Shravani Somvari. In Jyotish, Shiva worship in Shravan is a classical remedy for an afflicted Moon, Saturn (Sade Sati, Dhaiya) and Rahu-Ketu, with Rudrabhishek as the fuller ritual. It supports the chart; it does not replace a proper reading of it.

Locally the shrine is affectionately called the "Deoghar of North Bihar", because for devotees who cannot make the long journey to Baba Baidyanath in Deoghar, Garibnath is where Shravan devotion is offered. The name itself — Garib-nath, "the Lord of the poor" — expresses the popular belief that Mahadev here listens to the humble and the struggling. Stories about how the temple got its name differ from family to family, and we will not pretend to know the exact founding history; what is certain is the depth of faith Muzaffarpur has in it.
Besides Shravan, the temple is busy on Mahashivratri and on ordinary Mondays all year. Marriages, mundan and new-vehicle pujas are also frequently started with a visit to Garibnath.
Kanwariyas reach Pahleja Ghat near Sonepur, take a dip in the Ganga, and fill two pots tied to a bamboo kanwar. The ghat lies near the meeting of the Gandak and the Ganga — the same sacred zone of Harihar Kshetra famous for the Sonepur Mela. Many devotees take a sankalpa at the ghat stating their name, gotra and the wish for which they are carrying the jal.
The route passes through Saran and Vaishali districts towards Muzaffarpur, and most kanwariyas walk through Saturday night and Sunday to arrive for Monday's jalabhishek. Rules followed by most:
Health note: the walk is long and done in the monsoon heat. Anyone with heart, joint or blood-pressure problems should consult a doctor first; a jalabhishek offered after a car journey, or at a neighbourhood temple, is also accepted by Mahadev.
For the larger Shravani Mela route in the Anga region, read our guide to Shravani Mela at Sultanganj and the kanwar to Deoghar.
Shravani Somvari brings very large crowds. The district administration usually sets up queues, barricades, separate lines and medical camps; timings for darshan and the closing of the garbhagriha are announced locally each year, so check the latest notices instead of relying on old information.
Practical tips for a Somvari visit:
Shravan has a natural link with Shiva in Jyotish and Purana tradition: the Samudra Manthan story places Shiva's drinking of Halahal poison in this season, and devotees cool him with water — the root of the jalabhishek custom.
Shiva wears the crescent Moon on his head; he is Somnath, the Lord of Soma. A weak or afflicted Moon — Moon with Rahu or Ketu (Grahan Yoga), Moon with Saturn (Vish Yoga), Moon in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or a debilitated Moon in Scorpio — commonly shows as anxiety, sleeplessness, mood swings and emotional dependence. Monday jalabhishek with milk mixed in Ganga jal is the most traditional Chandra upay.
Shiva is regarded as Shani's guru in popular tradition, and Rudra worship is widely prescribed during Sade Sati, Dhaiya and Shani Mahadasha. Combined Somvar Shiv puja and Saturday Hanuman or Shani worship is a common Bihar pattern. See our detailed post on Shani Sade Sati effects and remedies.
Shiva wears serpents as ornaments and is invoked as the master of the Nagas, so Shiva worship is the backbone of Rahu-Ketu and Kalsarp remedies. Rahu dasha confusion, sudden fears, addiction tendencies and Grahan Dosh are traditionally addressed with Rudrabhishek and Mahamrityunjaya japa. More in our guide to Rahu-Ketu effects and remedies.
| Planet affliction | Typical signs people report | Shiv puja upay in Shravan |
|---|---|---|
| Weak or afflicted Moon | Anxiety, poor sleep, mood swings | Milk + Ganga jal abhishek on Mondays, Om Namah Shivaya 108 times |
| Saturn — Sade Sati, Dhaiya | Delays, heaviness, workload, joint pain | Rudrabhishek with til oil lamp on Saturday evening, Mahamrityunjaya japa |
| Rahu dasha or Rahu-Moon | Confusion, fear, sudden events | Rudrabhishek with Ganga jal and bel patra, Shiva Panchakshari japa |
| Ketu affliction | Detachment, sudden losses, health worries | Jalabhishek with durva and black til, Ganesh puja first |
| Kalsarp Yoga | Recurring obstacles | Naga puja on Nag Panchami plus Somvar Rudrabhishek |
Rudrabhishek (रुद्राभिषेक) is the fuller form of jalabhishek, done with recitation of the Rudrashtadhyayi from the Shukla Yajurveda.
Shiva Panchakshari:
ॐ नमः शिवाय — Om Namah Shivaya — "Salutations to Shiva."
Mahamrityunjaya mantra — for health, fear and Saturn or Rahu periods:
ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम्। उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय माऽमृतात्॥ — Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam, Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat — "We worship the three-eyed Lord who nourishes all; may he free us from bondage and death, as the ripe cucumber is freed from the vine, and not from immortality."
Chandra mantra — for the Moon, 108 times on Mondays:
ॐ सों सोमाय नमः — Om Som Somaya Namah — "Salutations to Soma, the Moon."
| Do | Don't |
|---|---|
| Keep sattvik food through Shravan, or at least on Mondays | Offer tulsi, kumkum, haldi or ketaki flowers on the Shivling |
| Offer bel patra with the smooth side touching the Shivling | Do a full parikrama — cross the jaladhari, tradition says go half-way and return |
| Fix a Rudrabhishek date from the Panchang and your chart | Take on painful vows against medical advice |
| Wear a properly energised Rudraksha only if advised | Pay for repeated costly pujas out of fear |

A jalabhishek is open to everyone without any chart. But if you are going to Garibnath with a specific worry — a long Saturn period, a Rahu Mahadasha, recurring anxiety — a short reading first makes the remedy precise. Most kanwariyas fill their kanwar with Ganga water at Pahleja Ghat near Sonepur in Saran district, where the Gandak meets the Ganga. They then walk barefoot to Muzaffarpur, usually travelling through the night before Somvar, and offer the water on the Shivling at Baba Garibnath Dham. Some devotees also use Ganga jal brought from other ghats.
The Mondays of Shravan, called Shravani Somvari, are the most important and draw the biggest crowds. Pradosh tithis, Masik Shivratri and Shravan Purnima are also popular. If you want a quieter darshan, an ordinary weekday in Shravan or an early-morning slot is far easier, and the spiritual value of a sincere offering is not reduced.
In Jyotish tradition Shiva is the guardian of Saturn and the master of Rahu and Ketu, so Rudrabhishek, Om Namah Shivaya japa and Mahamrityunjaya mantra are classic upay during Sade Sati or a Rahu period. They are supportive practices that help steadiness of mind. They do not cancel karma or guarantee outcomes, and the chart should be read first.
The traditional offerings are Ganga jal, raw milk, bel patra with three leaves, dhatura, aak flowers, bhang leaves, white flowers, sandal paste and akshat. Avoid offering tulsi leaves, kumkum, haldi or ketaki flowers on the Shivling. Offer slowly with a mantra and do not waste milk; many devotees now give extra milk to the needy instead.
A Rudrabhishek performed at home with proper sankalpa, a clean Shivling or Parthiv Shivling and correct recitation is fully valid in tradition. The temple adds the strength of a sacred place and collective devotion. Many Muzaffarpur families do jalabhishek at Garibnath and then hold a fuller Rudrabhishek at home on a day chosen from the Panchang.
