Simaria Dham in Begusarai — सिमरिया धाम, बेगूसराय — is the great Ganga ghat of central Bihar where, every Kartik, families come to live on the riverbank in Kalpvas (कल्पवास) and take the holy dip on Kartik Purnima. Known as the southern gateway of Mithila, Simaria draws pilgrims from Begusarai, Samastipur, Darbhanga, Khagaria and Patna. In recent years it has also seen the revival of a Kumbh-style gathering, and for many devotees a Kartik Ganga snan here is a yearly upay for the Moon, Jupiter and ancestral karma.
Quick answer: Simaria Dham is a sacred Ganga ghat in Begusarai, best known for Kartik Kalpvas — a month of daily Ganga snan, one sattvik meal and devotion — ending with the Kartik Purnima snan. In Jyotish, Kartik Ganga snan and deepdaan are traditional remedies for a weak Moon, Jupiter and Pitru dosh. The exact snan date and window should come from the local Panchang.

The Ganga in Bihar is never just a river — every ghat carries its own memory. At Simaria, the river marks a meeting of regions: to the north lies Mithila, to the south Magadh and Anga. Maithil families have long brought their dead to the Simaria ghat for antim sanskar and their living for Kartik snan, which is why the place carries both solemnity and celebration. Begusarai also takes pride that the national poet Ramdhari Singh Dinkar was born in Simaria village.
Kalpvas means "dwelling for a kalpa" — a symbolic time of living close to the sacred. At Simaria it is kept during Kartik, the month described in the Puranas as dearest to Vishnu.
In the Purnimant reckoning used across North Bihar, Kartik runs from the day after Sharad Purnima (Ashwin Purnima) to Kartik Purnima, roughly mid-October to late November. Some families follow the solar month instead and begin around Tula Sankranti. Either way, the start date is fixed from the Panchang.
Health note: Kalpvas involves cold early-morning river baths and fasting. Elderly devotees and anyone with heart, lung or blood-sugar problems should consult a doctor and adapt the rules — tradition permits a lighter vow.
Since the early 2010s, saints and local organisers have revived a Kumbh-style gathering at Simaria, holding Ardh Kumbh and Kumbh events on the Ganga bank during Kartik. Supporters connect it with older Mithila traditions of a great bathing fair here. It is best understood as a regional revival: the four classical Kumbh sites remain Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik. During these gatherings, akharas, sadhus and tent cities line the ghat, and crowds grow far larger than in an ordinary Kalpvas year. Check local announcements for whether a Kumbh-year event is scheduled.
Kartik Purnima (also Tripurari Purnima and Dev Deepawali) is the climax of the month. In 2026 it falls in late November, about two weeks after Diwali; the exact tithi times and the best snan window should be checked in the Panchang for Begusarai, since Purnima tithi can span two calendar days.

| Pitru dosh | Tarpan with til and water on the ghat, deepdaan | Food to Brahmins and the needy |
| Saturn heaviness | Daily snan discipline, Shiva jal on Mondays | Black til, blanket for winter |
| General graha shanti | Full month Kalpvas with daily japa | As per capacity |

Ganga snan mantra:
गङ्गे च यमुने चैव गोदावरि सरस्वति। नर्मदे सिन्धु कावेरि जलेऽस्मिन् सन्निधिं कुरु॥ — Gange cha Yamune chaiva Godavari Sarasvati, Narmade Sindhu Kaveri jale'smin sannidhim kuru — "O Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Saraswati, Narmada, Sindhu and Kaveri, be present in this water."
Chandra mantra:
ॐ सों सोमाय नमः — Om Som Somaya Namah — "Salutations to Soma, the Moon."
Vishnu mantra — for Jupiter and Kartik:
ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय — Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya — "Salutations to Lord Vasudeva."
A short journey from Begusarai town lies Kanwar Lake (Kabar Tal), a vast wetland and Bihar's first Ramsar site. On raised ground within it stands Jaimangalagarh, the temple of Maa Jaimangla, revered across the district as a protective Shakti. Devotees visit on Tuesdays and through Navratri to pray for success and protection, and many Simaria Kalpvasis add a darshan here before or after the month. In winter, the lake hosts migratory birds, so carry binoculars and keep noise low.
| Do | Don't |
|---|---|
| Bathe at marked, safe ghats and watch children closely | Go into deep or fast water — the Ganga current is strong |
| Use eco-friendly diyas and flowers | Throw plastic or soap into the river |
| Fix snan and tarpan dates from the Panchang | Rely on viral posts for tithi timings |
| Follow administration instructions in Kumbh years | Push or rush in crowded snan windows |

Kalpvas is a month-long vow of living on the Ganga bank, bathing in the river every day, eating simple sattvik food once a day, sleeping on the ground and spending time in japa, katha and satsang. At Simaria in Begusarai, families mainly from Mithila and central Bihar observe it in the month of Kartik, ending with the Kartik Purnima snan.
Kartik Purnima in 2026 falls in late November, about two weeks after Diwali. The snan is traditionally taken at Brahma Muhurta on the Purnima tithi. Because the tithi start and end times vary by location, check the Panchang for Begusarai or Patna for the exact date and the best snan window before travelling.
Yes. Since the early 2010s, saints and local organisers have revived a Kumbh-style gathering at Simaria Ghat, holding Ardh Kumbh and Kumbh events on the Ganga bank in Kartik. Supporters link it with old traditions of Mithila. It is a regional revival, separate from the four classical Kumbh sites of Prayag, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik.
Ganga snan is traditionally treated as a purifier for all nine grahas, but it is especially linked with the Moon, Jupiter and ancestral karma. Kartik snan with deepdaan is advised for a weak Moon, Jupiter afflictions and Pitru dosh, while tarpan on the ghat supports ancestors. It complements, rather than replaces, chart-specific remedies.
Jaimangalagarh is a Devi temple of Maa Jaimangla on raised ground within the Kanwar Lake wetland in Begusarai district. Devotees visit for Navratri and Tuesdays to pray for protection and success. The surrounding Kanwar Lake is a major bird habitat and Bihar's first Ramsar wetland, so winter visits also bring migratory birds.
